RE: Mini Cooper S: Spotted
Discussion
Had a pre facelift. I think the post facelifts were a massive improvement, along with the JCW models. Mine was pretty slow for what it was, the gear shift was very stiff and would shake fillings loose and bruise kidneys on bumpy roads and the factory sound system was beyond dismal. It did have a good sound (both stock exhaust and supercharger whine) decent build quality on the interior, good visibility, ok MPG and was extremely reliable.

1. chronopack (moves the speedo back infront of the driver and replaces the centre dials with oil temp, pressure and other info) and the JCW kit;
2. The supercharger noise and the exhaust pop & bang's really don't help with the MPG though
3. (I even left the rear seats down to enjoy the noise!),
4. I only get about 25mpg driving about town and occasional blats at the weekend.
5. Still... I certainly didn't buy it for the economy.

Looking forward to picking up one of these in a few weeks - 06 plate in grey. Hoping the switch to standard tyres is worth it over runflats...
First thing I did! Well worth it, gets rid of (some of) the hunting across the road, not that you want to get rid of all of it, as it is part of the fun.
Worth thinking about get the front wishbone bushes poly-bushed as this really helps tighten up the front end, but doesn't make the ride any worse.

Awesome, hadn't heard that mentioned before but will look into it - cheers for the tip Well worth it, gets rid of (some of) the hunting across the road, not that you want to get rid of all of it, as it is part of the fun.

Our RFTs came off a week after buying the car.
I owned a 2002 Mini Cooper S in grey for a year. Of course I added bonnet stripes I sold it when the clutch started to slip.
Later cars are better, as they ditched the poor British Midland Gearbox and replaced with a Getrag unit, which was considerably more reliable and stronger.
I still think these are great looking cars. The S-Spoke wheels look fantatsti, but they are well known to hamper the handling as they are very heavy.
Upgrades are plentiful. New pully will see another 20bhp and I think they are only £150. They sound pretty decent with a performance exhaust too.

My daily driver! Although I have a factory JCW, so a bit more power and noise from the get go, I absolutely love it! Supercharger sounds great and it's got just the right amount of power to be fun without getting you into trouble. Bought mine for £4.5k late 2015 with 70,000 miles. Currently on 94,000 miles and the proper JCWs still go for around £4k if in good condition. So pretty good for depreciation too!
Only problem is fuel...it's a 10 gallon tank and I average 28 to the gallon, I go to petrol stations a lot!!
BUT...while on that subject. Fuel. Petrol stations. Why don't people fill the tank to the brim?! Why £10 every few days? It's the same!! Your car burns fuel at the same rate, and your fuel costs the same per litre. You aren't saving money, you're wasting time!!
Anyway that's my main rant, it honestly annoys me more than Brexit.

As mentioned on run flats with standard suspension they can be harsh.
Mine has coilovers which soften the ride and standard tyres and the difference is quite remarkable. Thoroughly recommend these changes if you're considering one as a daily driver.
Mine has only 36k miles so the standard suspension wasn't even tired either.

Here's a theory. My daily will take 40 litres of fuel...£50 or so. I put in £25 a week, because I don't want to drag round the extra weight....there is logic in that right? right? This is a diesel though...
not filling your tank with petrol gives space for the fuel to evaporate...so I like my petrol car brimmed, especially when I find low price 98RON.
Someone put my 'science' straight.
On topic. I want to (will) swap my diesel for a R53 Cooper S this spring/summer....
I'm on my fourth MINI now... Started with a new Cooper Convertible back in 2004, then a Cooper S Hatch that was tweaked up to 215hp, with a very screamy supercharger, then a Supercharged 2008 Cooper S convertible.
Despite having other cars in between (Fiesta, Golf R), I always end up coming back to the MINIs.
Now I'm in a new F57 JCW Convertible - it does lack the rawness of the Gen 1 supercharged cars, but its a quality piece of kit.
I'll have another Gen1 car again one day.....
