I'd forgotten about the MK3 Estate. My first car was a 2000E Saloon (automatic). White with a black vinyl roof. I passed my test in my dads Vauxhall Chevette (manual). It was a company car in the most basic spec. Light blue in colour and actually quite nice to drive (way back then). I'm sure it was RWD because I remember what fun it was in the wet

Edit: My memory is getting worse. Actually, my first car was a Mini 850. It was given to me when I was 16 but it needed so much work (rust everywhere), that I stripped the whole car and sold what I could for spares. The rest was scrapped. I passed my test at 17 but waited another year before I got the Cortina.

Hmmm. I passed the test in driving instructor's mini.
I learnt to drive in my own Fiat 850 coupe and Vauxhall Victor F-type, plus my parents' cars which were Austin Maxi and Austin Princess.

1972 1300 Beetle. Driving School car, and I had never driven it before my test . Did my lessons in my own 1200 Herald, but thought it would look better to turn up for the test in a driving school car. Passed, aged 17. ( been driving around private land since about 12 )

Mk1 Clio 1.9 diesel.

Learned to drive in a mk1 Espace and a Frontera. The first time I drove the Clio was when I passed my test, it was also the first time I drove a car without power steering. Felt a bit strange but it all worked out.

I remember it well... a polo 1.9sdi. No turbos here! It had done 196K miles too! First car I drove post driving test was my parents 1.3 Toyota Starlet, and it felt like a rocket ship compared to the polo.

My mum had one of those. Rusty orange. I drove it after my test and wrote it off on black ice. Bounced off stone wall at 40mph and onto the roof. The road was so slippy the recovery truck couldn't tow it until after the gritters were out.

Passed my test in a Triumph Dolomite, 1979.
