RE: VW Golf R Performance

Looking at the configurator, I see that the estate R now allows a towbar to be fitted. The hatchback doesn't specify it. This is a major decision factor for a middle aged man considering buying what is essentially still a boy racer's car. Subtle paintwork, wheels and towbar + performance ++++ and I'm there... Anyone listening VW?
I'll get me coat...
Totally agree. If I could fit a towbar I'd order one today. I'll have to call the dealer.I'll get me coat...
I'm 33...not quite middle aged. I just want to fit my towbar mounted bike rack, tow a trailer for moving furniture, motorbikes, and going to the tip.

This will be another dull version of this already dull car. Sure it has lots of horsepower, 4-wheel drive and can beat most cars in the traffic light grand prix. but it sounds rubbish, totally un-engaging, lacks any drama (other than acceleration), terrible interior, and looks boring. Am surprised they haven't also increased it to 8 exhaust pipes across the back just to increase the chavness appeal. It's just a chav car for grown up chavs with kids that require baby seats.
yes, I'll get insulted, abused, and flamed now for having this opinion but I don't care. People will now likely go back through my profile, to try to look at my car and comment history so that they can say reply with lame things like "well you drive a ford mondeo, do you sell double glazing?" or "wow, that's a strong opinion from someone that's had 3 Robin Reliants. Your opinion is worthless". That's the sorry state of PH these days.
I had a Golf GTI and bought a Golf R thinking it would be a great car. I found it a total waste of money as it was boring in every respect and the GTI was so much better. I went back to the GTI before eventually switching to something else.
And to answer the usual question that'll appear because some moron will assume I just couldn't afford the Golf R and that was the real reason for changing it: I bought the Golf R, didn't lease it.

While obviously a troll, I do have to congratulate you on a full-house of PH Golf R themes. Top work right there, especially for a first post.yes, I'll get insulted, abused, and flamed now for having this opinion but I don't care. Golf..... they peaked with the Mark 1 GTi 1800 back in 1980, since then, boring "blue rinse old lady cars. So much better out there for less money.
No they didnt, I have had two of those and they were ground breaking, however they also had crap brakes, crap headlights, zero in the way of kit etc etc, I guarantee an R is more fun to drive than a 112 bhp mk1.Its old, must be fantastic, thats how religions start, its just nostalgia and maybe a smidge of rawness but really ?
Anyway, the 1800 didnt arrive until 1983, 1980 models were still 1600 cc 4 speeders with the early small lights if I remember correctly.

@PixelpeepS3 - whilst I did create this account today I'm not actually DPSFleet. How dare you let assign credit for my post to someone else.
@Derwins Revenge - thanks! Had to get all of that off my chest. PH really is just a st slinging contest these days. If you DARE to criticise a car then someone who likes it just goes back through your profile and comments on something you said 2 years ago. tossers.

I shall diarise now for 14.03.2019 when your post will most definitely come back to haunt you I've also always had a soft spot for funky Reliants, and certainly nothing wrong with Mondeos. The other 3 you own are all a bit "meh" though.

Yeah I know PH can be a bit like that, but everyone is entitled to their opinion. It may even differ from yours and that they don't agree the R is dull and chavvy. I know, crazy.@Derwins Revenge - thanks! Had to get all of that off my chest. PH really is just a st slinging contest these days. Guess you must have been lurking for some time seeing as you know PH enough to comment about how the forum is these days. Thanks for signing up, especially with such a daring, nuanced swipe at the R.
And PP, how very dare you!

Doubt it, VWs TFSI engine sounds rubbish no matter what exhaust you put on it.
Dont most modern turbo 4 pots though? All of the plastic and tech in there mute anythign interesting, really comes home when you hear an 80s/90's turbo car whooshing and fluttering.Performance is much higher today though and I suppose decent mpg and the ability to easily live with a 300bhp hatch as an everyday car is the trade-off and probably worth it.

Go on, i'll bite, give us some examples then?
I think the R is great value for money, especially on a PCP deal at ca. £275pm.
Serious question here, from someone who has never actually bought a brand new car.Go on, i'll bite, give us some examples then?

Where are prices like this found?
My girlfriend and I looked pretty seriously at getting a brand new car last year. We were looking right at the Focus/Golf segment and were seeing PCP prices north of £300 for pretty run of the mill engines/specs. It was fairly easy to push a mid-range Golf over £400 per month and still be lacking a lot of kit.
What piqued our interest was seeing a 0% offer on Skodas. It made an SE spec Octavia with a diesel engine ~£260 per month. We then further afield for comparison's sake.
We decided it wasn't worth it and stuck with getting a used car. I see claims of ludicrously cheap Golf R deals and feel we've missed a trick somewhere!

Did you take a look online? Many of Golf R deals were lease not PCP, so no option of purchase, e.g. https://www.stablevehiclecontracts.co.uk/ have quite a few nice options well under £400pmWhere are prices like this found?

I don't know if that is because people who tow things are generally considered to be more careful drivers, or because if you have tow-bar and get rear-ended it does less damage to your car? I can't see many of these getting rear-ended though, but if they left the road backwards...

Whether you like them or not the R is simply one of the best steers you can get into today for the price. There's a mint low mileage one for sale near me at the moment - £18.5k. There's no better all rounder at that money.

They're definitely no 6 or 8 cylinder but even then, as 4 pots go, the VAG engine is particularly bland sounding.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
