Why not call it something else, and then it doesn't come with all the baggage that 'new defender' brings with it? (probably in stupid side boxes)
To the 'marketing experts' (sic) at LR, the Defender doesn't come with baggage, it comes with 'heritage'. Which they're (ab)using as much as possible.

Not sure it's possible to overstate my disgust for that organisation at the moment...unbelievably arrogant (both 'in market' with customers and when dealing with suppliers) yet with pretty much no reason for it.

Still...at least the Jaguar front ends don't look as bad as the new BMWs... hurlbiggrin
the way i feel about JLR is that it should be loved and cherished by every British person God Save the Queen etc, however in reality the way i feel is that they are an absolute bunch of s. It isn't even about the brand and heritage, it's about credibility and fundamental trust etc. If they have this 'heritage' in being able to make the off-roader to beat all off-roaders (it isn't, but still it's like Hoover, Coca Cola etc.) then why would they put out something which is probably capable but doesn't meet the brief? It meets a totally different brief, which they don't admit... so then you go well ah fk off, with your underhand made up ste. To say they are abusing their heritage is an understatement... i think they are fist-fking their own company to death.

ETA... apparently a "commercial" version is coming soon.... can't imagine that is roadside serviceable either.

Perhaps if their products weren't made to the same standards as British Leyland's were they would be.

i was more referring to a moral thing... it feels like we should love them for whatever daft nostalgic reason, but they do everything they can to undermine it.

it's funny because i don't recognise you at all. Why you so obsessed with me you total weirdo? Also I notice that in your profile it says "automotive design consultant"... i wonder who you work for.

Just to break up the weird JLR arguments, that Jannarelly is a cracking spot.
I've never seen one, but I kinda like it!
Shall I peel back the cover?

Stumbled across this somewhere under London.

Had to Google it as it's new to me.
That is their test car - I drove it the other day (from that very spot). Great fun but a bit too raw and "full on" for my tastes.

This is a better video.

Internet approval:

"We want light weight RWD"

OK say Toyota (GT86), Lotus, Alfa and Renault

The internet say "Hmm, I'd rather have something with a nice German badge".

Never, ever listen to what car enthusiasts say they want. They are a bunch of liars.

I can relate to that - in 2014 I had a test drive in a GT86, then went and bought a BMW Z4 Coupe!

And I'm not sure why either of those get a mention on a thread with the word "supercar" in the header - but they are surely a bit more deserving than a Defender FFS. banghead

As capable as they may be in some conditions, Land Rover have never made a "supercar" and have no place in this thread!

Such an odd badge to see on a car like this. This particular example was filthy and covered in mould. The front view is ridiculous with its grill and vents but couldn’t get a pic!

Wonder how well the leather gearknob is holding up with age, you know, the only real change from the standard IQ...

Along with just about every single body panel, the seats, and most of the other interior bits... wink
As pointless as they are it would have been a substantially better investment than the IQ, in 2011 one would have cost you just over £30k they still change hands for that now, or in some cases higher, the Toyota about £10k new and probably loose change now. wink
And although maybe not 'super' they are certainly rare with only about 100 out and about on the road. driving

I'd have, if I had unlimited money. Or a proper Brabus Smart (about £50k).

I have a regular Smart and they are handy for the role they were designed for. If I had a load of money, i'd still want the same car, but with added luxuries.

Plus the Cygnet is a curio, so I like it even more!

What I typically see is people say "Who'd spend X on THAT!", which is irrelevant to the owner who can actually afford it.

Hi there,

I have a real thing for Cygnets, I just know I am going to own one quite soon.
Think they are a pretty sound investment if bought right.
I missed out on one last year at £27,950 which is still sat at a dealer, problem is he's now put the price up to £32,950 :-)

I really like this one, pretty sure its one of the ex motorshow cars enhanced by Q

I dont think that 'investment' pays off when you can be seen driving about it one. The pointing and laughing will get a bit wearisome.

My point was if they had actually changed the engine and underneath it may be a bit more interesting. Otherwise, they've just rebadged it you fool. Oh, and peeled a cow for the interior.

This doesn't happen so your point is pointless.

Investment in what way? We know that ICE engines are on the way out and there are going to be more and more restrictions on their use.

Are you going to want to get up early on a Sunday and go for a drive in a Cygnet?

Are you going to want to polish it to an inch of its life and park in a field with other Cygnets so the owner who did the most polishing can get a medal?

Are you going to go into your garage and just marvel at its looks?

I can't see these becoming desirable classics that people will want to own once there are additional hassles in owning an old ICE vehicle. It's not exactly going to match a DB5 in the desirability stakes.

You'll spend 30K to drive about in a small Toyota with some Aston Martin bling but you might as well spend the money on an Aston V8 vantage which will surely give you more pleasure.

Maybe the depreciation on the 30K will be slow, but you could spend 5K on a Toyota IQ, which can't lose more than 5K, which sounds like a better investment to me.

Really don't understand your logic.

Take a look at the residuals on them.
Some of the best Aston have ever achieved ironically.
I'd still never be seen dead in one!
Though Stirling Moss has a green one wink
