They were noticeably quicker once past about 25,000 miles. If I recall correctly either Autocar or Motor re-figured their long term test car at that sort of mileage and it was about a second quicker to 60. And they always needed revving out to deliver their best.

I read that too and also remember Quentin Wilson testing one during Top Gear many moons back and said that the higher the mileage, the quicker they get (well, 60K anyway). Admittedly, when I drove it, it was in 1992 so maybe I was expecting more and didn't rev it as it was meant too.

I do like those wedgy old CRXs with the extra glass in the tailgate. Unfortunately they'd started to get scarce/expensive before I got my driving license.

Reenault 5 Turbo 2, rwd, engine in the back and 160bhp in a car that looks seriously mean wink
I don't think that you can have this, it was always a HS and not really comparable with the mainstream hot hatches.

I drove a Delta HF Turbo in about 1992, bloody awesome machine. The only snag was that the insurance companies had woken up by then and a quote of £900 was enough to put me off, 25 years ago.
Dont see why not, if the Clio Williams can be classed as a hot hatch then a R5 Turbo 3 can, they produced enough of them wink

Sticks.

Probably in a minority here, but of all the ones I've tried, I'd have a Mk2 XR2 again. Not because it had the best performance, but it was easiest to enjoy what it did offer, and a good all-rounder.

Never tried the R5 Turbo but a friend had one and sold it 'before I lose my licence'. Ie, very fast in their day.

Chevette HSR and Lotus Sunbeam also.
If SWMBO allowed me a 3 car garage either of these would be in it (the original hot hatches).

Maybe one of these just because ...

diabolical brakes, but...

Would be easy to upgrade using various cav turbo bits in the day, you could use VXR stuff now..

Does a Sierra XR4i count? An Uncle had one when I was about 8 and I have wanted one ever since.

I always love the slightly quirkier, often flawed stuff. Really wanted a dhaihatsu charade gtti for a while. Then a polo g40 became my obsession. Would have loved a civic vti too. 8000rpm at the time was a rare thing.

Proper hot hatches have passed me by a bit but I have a real hankering for a 105xsi 1.4 or a yellow 205 rallye nowadays.

Talbot Samba S / Rallye
Fiat Strada 105 TC
Fiat Strada 130TC Abarth
Daihatsu Charade GTti
Golf GTi 8Valve Mk2
Sunbeam Lotus

The Golf is the only one that I would go back to........Rose tinted spectacles best left in the box ...!

Hmm, you're right, the HS was 135bhp, I read the wrong bit - but this page only says 150hp for the HSR ? http://www.classiccars4sale.net/classic-car-review...
This too: http://www.classicandsportscar.com/guides/classic-...

Article at the time suggest 15hp over the HS too: http://www.motorsportmagazine.com/archive/article/...

The rally HSrs had a 2.6 engine and were somewhere around 240hp

Only in rally trim, road cars has much less, eg Escort RS 1800 with the BDA engine only had around 115 bhp as a road car, the competion cars had around 240-260, same sort of thing for all those group 4 homologation cars.

I once had a Sierra XR4TI .... and does the Escort RS Cosworth (well, it had a hatch) count ? In which case, yes, I choose either of my Mallard Green Escort RS Cosworths as the most desirable.

mk2 golf GTI's were good but just too capable and dull. Loved the look of RS Turbo's but just couldn't look by the horrible CVH engine.

So for me it would be the 1.9 205. The steering feel was sublime.
And in 2nd place would be the mk2 Astra valver just for that engine.

Unfortunately I never owned any of them. At the peak of their popularity I was a skint student and even if I could afford the car I would never have been able to afford the insurance. So all the above from driving examples from friends and family.
