There is no definitive answer to this.

Some say "x" number of years, others say "y" number of years, yet more say things like Austin Allegro isn't a classic at all due to being not very good.

Can of worms.

Just wondered when does 'an old car' become a classic car ? I have read somewhere 20 years ? And 25 years ? Also that it depends on what your insurance company define as a "classic".....I get annoyed when i search certain auction sites and all they throw up is what i would call "old car's"....
We waited six years for that! Six years!

Suggest the OP uses the filter option on certain auction sites to more accurately define what he's searching for.

A classic car is one that people look around it when its parked and come over and have a chat about it.

I know that having kids makes people old, I never realised it had that effect on their cars too.

All depends on the car really, I'd say that cars older than 1990 can be classed as a classic car (depending on type etc) whereas newer cars can be classified as modern classics.

I think this should be accepted as a standard definition.
Perhaps point 1 should be extend to require at least 1 of the non-metric fasteners should be Whitworth.

Classic Car? It's entirely in the mind of the individual. Everybody will have their own definition, but for me the term applies to something that was attractive and desirable in its day, and still is now. As such, most BL cars can't make the grade for example. Like I said, it's a very personal thing.

Have to agree that everyone has a different definition!

Personally I think interesting cars tend to get to be Classic a bit quicker than porridge models, but that is only my opinion. laugh

I agree it's the usually the ones that were most appealing and desirable in the day, and still are today that defines them as a classic. E Types and Austin Healey's, for example, have always been regarded as classic cars, the E Type, only a few years after it was introduced was gaining status as an instant classic.

For me the definition of a classic car would be one from say the 1940s to the mid 1970s. Before the 1940s they are vintage, and from the mid 70s onward they are retro classics. But each to their own. Everyone has their own idea of what a classic car is. But I suppose things like charm, character, looks, style, etc do make a difference.

You'll have to ask for it to be referred to the Committee, then.
