I wonder if they could shoe horn the engine into the new Q5 and market it as an RSQ5? I have the outgoing SQ5 and it not lacking in pace, the Q7 is a little too big for me and its a shame this exact engine sits in only one vehicle.

There's a lot of prejudice and ignorance displayed in any SUV thread, we've come to expect that from the small minded people, but it's a shame to see some of it from Dan Trent, who one assumes aspires to become a motoring journalist when he grows up.
'Prejudice and ignorance' or 'people who you come at on narrow roads whilst they're going in the opposite direction in normal-sized vehicles rather a huge SelfishMobile, all whilst needlessly destroying the environment'.

'But it's big! I feel safe inside because it's so big. And I get to look down on others and that makes me feel superior.'
Congratulations, you've displayed some of the prejudice and ignorance just there. A van is the same width as a Q7, as is a Ferrari. Do you quake in your shoes when you see one of those coming towards you as well? How do you cope?

Interesting that defenders of these cars intimate that those who criticise them are simply jealous of the owners' wealth.
Firstly, it says a lot about you if you think others should be jealous of how many shiny things you can buy.
Secondly, the theory is shot down in flames because what you don't see on these pages are people slamming others for buying Ferraris.
Go on, quote a comment in this thread where someone says any critics are jealous. The only people projecting "these cars are bought because they are shiny" are people like you because you want to reinforce your own small minded view of the world.

Funny you should mention Ferraris. My 430 uses three times as much fuel as my SQ7, yet you decide that it's the SQ7 that is destroying the environment. We routinely travel in the Q7 with 5+ people on board, yet the 430 takes only 2. And yet you say it is the Q7 which is "selfish". You've got no arguments that actually stand up on merit, which brings us back to the prejudice and ignorance point.

Why do people hate this car so much?

Why do you care how other people spend their own money?

An interesting engine, as many have said, very complex to comply with emissions and drivability. 3-4 yrs ago when development was kicked off it probably made sense .. but now given the billions VW is rushing (panicking) to divert to EV development probably seems a waste.
My money would go on a Tesla X 90D .. much quicker, quieter, far more space and a lot cooler :-)

Very nice indeed although the new shape isn't really growing on me, but what a fantastic engine.

As for the SUV haters, laugh

Ferraris are also selfish - that's innately obvious.
They're also pointless, other than because they're fun.
The difference is that Ferraris are not everywhere - most unlike SUV's - so other road users are not continually hindered by Ferraris.

Yep, you're seeing the bigger picture here.

How many times a day do you tell yourself 'I've *earned* this money'?

How many times a day do you feel bitter that your life isn't quite as good as you had hoped?

I'd love to know in what real world situation this SQ7 will be faster than an RS6.
Have you ever driven an SUV?
Yes, and I'm aware of their limitations, hence why I'm questioning where this will be faster than an RS6.

I appreciate it will be very quick, but in what situation would it put an RS6 in its place?

I think there was an article this week in one of the rags comparing the Audi, RR, and Tesla. The upshot of it was that the Audi won, not because it was faster, but because it was more characterful. The Telsa was second, and the RR third.

I do wonder about these comparisons, in as much as, they happen at a point in time with a journalist who sees the vehicles for maybe a few days. There's no long term view in the comparison, and I see a lot of people here already making the point about engine complexity. The Tesla has one moving part, and you would think it would be more reliable long term, but that is one aspect of ownership that doesn't seem to be included in these types of reviews.

The engine used in the Tesla also wasn't the same as that used in, say, the P90. It doesn't take much to stuff in a bigger / denser battery pack in vehicles this size, so I would expect the next versions of Tesla SUV to have the option. Elon Musk has stated that battery tech is improving at a rate of around 30% per annum. Lets see in a few more years where the who ICE world is at, because I have a sneaking suspicion things will have shifted a bit.

Incredible engine. I wouldn't want to own it out of warranty, but it's a fantastic piece of engineering.

I don't like any of these big German SUVs, but I certainly wouldn't criticise anyone who does. They're not forcing me to drive one. Why should I care?

'Big = impressive' is the only 'thought' going on with those who buy these cars. High time there was a size and weight maximum on cars.
There is. 3.5t all-up weight. Achieve it how you please. Setting exterior dimensions, etc, means you'd get stupid situations where people would complain that their "legal" car doesn't fit down narrow roads - kinda like how people think that speed limits are a target and then proceed to throw their car off a hairpin at 40mph because "it was signposted at 40!".

I expect JagFan was simply making a heavy-handed point - which is that all cars have sensible limits on the public roads. No, an SQ7 is not as fast as an RS6 by any stretch, but in the real world of traffic and common sense it will probably get from A to B just as quickly.

Fair point.

The 3.5t limit isn't really a limit on cars, though.
Maybe:
seats up to 5 people - max. 1.9 tonnes.
seats up to 7 people - max. 2.1 tonnes.
If anything, I'd say those weights are too generous by about 100kg.
