Well hello.
boxedin I actually kind of like that a lot.

The only gripe I have is, all that rear light real estate, and they make the brake lights two tiny little pinpricks.

Why? Surely the brake lights are the ones you want to be the biggest, most noticable lights possible?

Wife has one on a very very cheap lease. I would say it's the best all rounder we have owned.

Tremendous

If it were a lower range Discovery 5, the area where that brake light is would be a black plastic blanking plate; you need to spend a lot of money to buy a D5 without a significant amount of the rear lights completely missing. Seriously!

What was the designer thinking with the back end of this car? It doesn't even seem to divide opinion based on the fact that I have yet to find a single person who thinks it's anything other than hideous. I'm not sure I would let it stop me choosing what I'm sure is a fantastic car, but it would be enough to count as a serious demerit. Why did they do it?

The car must have passed through focus groups etc. I refuse to believe that not one person said - "that back end, it's gopping"

The Disco 5 is a fantastic, albeit flawed, car.

Do you have a photo of that? The brake lights have to be visible with the rear door open, hence they are small and on the outside, if that was blanked off, there wouldn't be a rear brake light.

The discovery 1 and 2 also struggled with odd brake light position because of this.

To me it looks like it is always on the verge of falling over. The rear bumper is horrid. The three quarter rear view is bad. Everything else is okay.

Funny, as when you're behind one your eyes are drawn to the number plate.

It doesn't matter to the drivers though, they can't see it.

It's a less convincing change of looks than the worst of the Bangle era BMWs. It just looks totally characterless, bland.

Make sure to get powered tailgate with this so you can open from inside and get to the back without having to look at the rear

it is interesting he gets/got my st when his design ideas are used in car brand, and the 'flame surfacing', even by BMW current cars. I thought he got wrongly vilified, but looking back the cars weren't that bad and pretty much set BMW on the design path now.

I was talking to the sales manager at Stafford land rover (bought my m3 from there bizarrely enough) about this and apparently JLR are redesigning the tailgate.

The Disco Sport is on the whole a smart and conservative style car. It's also about the limit of the metalwork. By taking the Sport design and stretching it, it has made the Disco look stupidly slab sided that you wonder if the driver can see anything.

Just the tailgate... The back and sides need surgery

While I doubt LR are genuinely redesigning the tailgate it really isn’t the only issue as the whole lower rear bumper is fking hideous! It looks an absolute mess.

Aside from the looks it has some major flaws that I can’t believe got past the drawing board:

-Not much room for your left foot as the transmission tunnel encroaches quite a lot
-You crack your head on the A pillar every time you get in
-Rear seats are far too low and your knees end up round your nipples
-Front seat armrests pivot too low and are basically useless
-The speedo and rev counter are in little ‘tunnels’ and are a pain in the arse to see

I could go on! An massive disappoint to many D4 owners who were hoping for something similar but modernised.

I didn’t like the rear at first but then I realised that I can enjoy the rest of the car and won’t really be bothered what the rear looks like / what other people think.
