While I doubt LR are genuinely redesigning the tailgate it really isn’t the only issue as the whole lower rear bumper is fking hideous! It looks an absolute mess.

Aside from the looks it has some major flaws that I can’t believe got past the drawing board:

-Not much room for your left foot as the transmission tunnel encroaches quite a lot
-You crack your head on the A pillar every time you get in
-Rear seats are far too low and your knees end up round your nipples
-Front seat armrests pivot too low and are basically useless
-The speedo and rev counter are in little ‘tunnels’ and are a pain in the arse to see

I could go on! An massive disappoint to many D4 owners who were hoping for something similar but modernised.
JLR are not interested in D4 owners.

They are redesigning the tailgate. I saw a pre-production facelift car in the Hagley area before Christmas. I followed it for a good few miles towards Worcester. It had a centered number plate. When it will happen is another thing. Given that the Disco 5 has only been for sale just over a year, I doubt even JLR would risk pissing off existing Disco 5 owners with a major update 3 years before it is due.

Well, I suppose the other option for the redesign would be to offer it as a split tailgate version and incorporate a centralised number plate into that.

Don’t get me wrong, when I had one for a couple of days I actually grew to like it on the whole - it’s a grower rather than having instant ‘wow’. The things that annoyed me would probably be forgotten about and I’m sure the D5’s rivals have their own issues. The XC90 is utterly soulless with dreadful engines, the X5 rides too hard and the Q7 is, well, an Audi. (The Q7 is actually my favourite but not sure it would be much use off-road.)

I didn’t like the rear at first but then I realised that I can enjoy the rest of the car and won’t really be bothered what the rear looks like / what other people think.
"Do to others as you would have them do to you." smile Would you like to be driving behind 'that'.

My issue is it isn't ugly enough.

Ugly can be good (look at most BMWs, especially the X6), the Porsche Panamera, the Nissan Juke.

If it would be truly ugly, that would redeam it for me but it's just badly styled. A design team with no imagination or any concept of what is good.

It isn't even utilitarian.

It has the styling finesse of a low budget fridge freezer aimed at a developing country.

It's a less convincing change of looks than the worst of the Bangle era BMWs. It just looks totally characterless, bland.
it is interesting he gets/got my st when his design ideas are used in car brand, and the 'flame surfacing', even by BMW current cars. I thought he got wrongly vilified, but looking back the cars weren't that bad and pretty much set BMW on the design path now.
Veering OT now...Re BMW - d'you really think so? I'd say the latest BMW's design almost apologetically smooths out/discards the worse excesses of the Bangle influence.

I was talking to the sales manager at Stafford land rover (bought my m3 from there bizarrely enough) about this and apparently JLR are redesigning the tailgate.
I'm going to call BS on that.

Even if it were true, a retailer would be the last person to know.

Don't underestimate the power of Jeremy Clarkson! I suspect it will be done as quick as they can do it.

Depends if the retailer had a conversation with one of the team who is working on the facelift.

Call BS, I followed a disguised Disco 5 with a central tailgate. The car exists. biggrin

With regard to the naff offset rear number plate on the current version, would there be any potential for a simple after market "plug" panel that fitted into the recess to make it flush with the rest of the tailgate allowing a centralised plate. I appreciate there may be issues with the number plate illumination but I can't imagine it could be that difficult.

Well hello.
boxedin I actually kind of like that a lot.

The only gripe I have is, all that rear light real estate, and they make the brake lights two tiny little pinpricks.

Why? Surely the brake lights are the ones you want to be the biggest, most noticable lights possible?
If it were a lower range Discovery 5, the area where that brake light is would be a black plastic blanking plate; you need to spend a lot of money to buy a D5 without a significant amount of the rear lights completely missing. Seriously!
Do you have a photo of that? The brake lights have to be visible with the rear door open, hence they are small and on the outside, if that was blanked off, there wouldn't be a rear brake light.

The discovery 1 and 2 also struggled with odd brake light position because of this.
Not necessarily, the Audi Q3/Q5/Q7 all have the entire rear light cluster lifting with the tailgate, however Audi obviously get around the design regulations by just fitting a sensor that recognises when the tailgate is open and then utilising the foglights in the bumper as the brake lights. It's why you'll occasionally see an Audi Q5 where they'll brake and the fog lights come on rather than the main brake lights.

But as ^ said, where do the brake lights go then?

Pity they can't do anything about the sulky lower lip, er.. rear valance/plastic diffuser thingy.

Had a D3 HSE and it was a great car, even though it required a few garage visits to keep it tip top..

D4 was obviously an evolution, and still great looking and fit for purpose.

The D5 meanwhile, just seems confused. I had a poke around one and it seemed smaller, boot was a lot smaller, ditto rear seats, luxurious like a RR, but didn't need to be.

Finally the rear number plate, can't help but laugh when I see one. Wife and I always said that there will be a facelift to correct it.....and many people will be upset when this arrives.

Discovery's 3 and 4 looked good and their asymmetrical rear door/boot lid looked right. Why does this one look so bad? They just don't look right at all, surely they could have kept the trade mark back door and made it look right.

Being a fan of the D4, and despite being very rude about the current thing earlier in the thread, plus being aware that they really are quite capable off road I've tried very hard to get to like it.

Even though the best (only) possible colour is black, nope. Still left wondering who in JLR looked at that, said "Yep,nailed it there." and signed it off.

Increasingly not sure about the Velar too.
