RE: VW Golf R: Driven
Discussion
I really don't get why a manufacturer would have a "manual mode" on these boxes which changes gear on its own and/or ignores the driver's requests to change (baring situations where it would over-rev the engine, perhaps). Seems utterly stupid.
Aside from that, it seems to still be what it's always been - highly capable and very impressive but for me at least not particularly desirable.

Automatic upshifts are to avoid over-revving the engine. It would probably be better if the system just limited revs (by modulating the throttle) rather than upshift, as you can get caught out if you were just about to upshift manually and the box does it just before you hit the paddle.Aside from that, it seems to still be what it's always been - highly capable and very impressive but for me at least not particularly desirable.
The box will also prevent manual downshifts that would result in an over-rev too.
It will also downshift itself if the revs are approaching engine stall level, but that is pretty rare.
In true PH style, I enquired about an R estate after receiving an email from the outfit I arranged my Tiguan lease through. I was told they're only coming in DSG flavour now. Didn't seem right?
Mrs PB put a stop to my crazy idea so it looks like we'll be spending the same money a month on a new Tig with less than half the power instead. Ah well, tbf, I guess it's all I need!

The estates were always DSG-only.I could've lived with DSG I think. :-(

Few of my mates have these and I would sooner have my Megane RS. But if you want a rapid 8/10ths car thats fool proof to drive then the Golf R suits perfectly. I can fully understand why I see so many of them on the road given the lease prices that were available.
I sold my Megane for a R estate and compared to the Megane the Golf is a huge disappointment. Yes it is very competent but it is just lacking any sparkle.Lucas Ayde said:

however, you can software tweak the DSG box to
a) not automatically change down (disable kickdown in manual mode)
b) not to change up at rev limiter (instead it will just hit the limiter)
c) faster and more responsive gear changes
They are pretty good gearboxes but for track work they definitely need software tweaks from the likes of Revo or other.

The facelift Leon ST Cupra remains available as a FWD manual with lsd so the recommendation stands?
Ah fk, you're correct. Sorry. Was convinced the AWD car had replaced the old one rather than joined it in the range. Copy should be amended to reflect that now.The facelift Leon ST Cupra remains available as a FWD manual with lsd so the recommendation stands?
Thanks!

I think there is a real place for the Golf R.
I've currently got an Mk3 RS and it's exactly as reviewed - A real sledgehammer car with everything turned up to the max.
As I'm getting older (43 now) then the allure of a slightly blunted knife for the sake of comfort and pace is a real option.
Plus, despite the talents of the current hottest of hatches I'm not a capable enough or silly enough to reach the limit on the road.
Maybe I might take a look at the R estate and wing the RS in px.

I like them. Problem is, the 2 people i know who have had them, both had them robbed in the night, from home, via break-ins
Very unfortunate indeed. Whilst I won't be leaving a wad of 20's on the dash with the windows open any time soon, I thought the car theft landscape had changed. I do not personally know of a single person in the last 15 years that's had a car stolen.gumsie said:

The methods have changed, but it is still rife.gumsie said:

Mine was stolen at 2am April 1st, they ripped the locks out on the side door of the house. Same gang stole ~10 cars that night and were caught a few days later using mine and two other stolen cars to steal more cars. Police think they are the same gang that stole at least that many over the last two months. From speaking to the Police house burglaries to steal the keys are very common at present.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
