But the M135/140 aren't distinguishable from a 116d or 120i M Sport.

Plus BMW interiors make for such an uninspiring place to sit! A friend has the M135i.

I might be considerably biased in my opinions though smile
One minute, the Golf is the car to have because it's subtle. The next, people are criticising rivals for, yes...being sublte. It seems the BMW can't win (though you can get the M Performance accessories if you'd like it a little more shouty).

Yeah you need to put the plug end in a bag or something and fasten it tightly. I havent done it on mine but I saw a video of somebody doing it.
Literally takes 1 min to do it via VCDS but arguably it does cost about £300 for the cable.

I can't wait for my estate to arrive its going to be a long 2/3 months.

My first ever estate and the fastest car I have owned to date baring in mind all I have had is a rover 25 1.4, rover 75 2.5 v6 auto, corsa 1.6t sri and 2.0 cdti astra (current).

I will miss diesel for the mpg but not the noise.

Although mine is bog standard as its a lease, I like the fact I could take my mum to the airport in it and she would have no idea the power it has.

There are cars of course that cater to those who want to shout about it (type r, focus rs), but the understated looks are fine for me. Some might say its dull but I haven't even driven a r yet so I wouldn't know!

I went for the gti pp over the r
I brought it second hand one owner and the spend on options was way over the cost of an r so there are people out there buying "just" the gti instead

The Golf R is certainly not a car for the purists, that's for sure.

A work colleague had his nicked off his drive in Solihull a couple of weeks. They smashed a back window of the house and grabbed the keys.

I'd rather my faster/lighter Cupra 300.

Thats mainly because it's fwd rather than pretend 4wd and all the better for it.

I'm not one for image though, I can appreciate a lot of people but the Golf for that.

Why is Haldex not smart anymore?
I thought the same system was used on Lamborghinis as well as Bugatti Veyron/Chiron?

In order to meet emissions and taxation targets, they had to go with a 2 litre 4 cylinder engine. The 3.2 V6 sounded great but guzzled petrol, attracted massive road tax and only delivered ~250bhp anyway. As well as making anything you put it in extremely nose heavy due to the extra weight and centre of gravity.

In everyday use, the soundaktor is very subtle. It's only intrusive if you go into 'Race' mode which you'll only be doing for very short periods of time anyway unless you are some sort of boy racer chav, in which case you'll probably like it. You can tweak the settings to make it extremely quiet if you like.
But VW have deliberately designed the cabin to be quiet and the engine + exhaust to also be quiet.

The soundaktor system is effectively the engineers going aw fk it's too quiet let's play a fake engine noise back because performance car. Merc have managed to knock up a 4 pot that sounds more engergtic externally and within the cabin without needing to play it back from memory. Soundaktor type systems will be significantly less expensive to develop than real tuned noise.

I chose a 140 as to me the Golf doesn't seem to have a lot of character.
Funny that, I chose the Golf because the M140i wasn't sharp enough. Definitely horses for courses eh?

That said, I drove the BMW for a week and ended up really loving the engine. I was just a bit put off by it's more "grown up/GT" handling.

No DSG here though ta... Just waiting for delivery, apparently sat in the port across the channel right now.

I'm a bit surprised by the weight of the wagon. Nearly 1600kg?!

Aren't these supposed to be mid-sized cars?

Back in the day, an Impreza was a 1250kg mid-sized car. What on earth has happened to cars to make them into such lardarses?
Cars have mostly just got bigger rather than heavier.

The golf is larger than a Ford Sierra, current cars are amazingly light for the size and performance.

Seems exactly the same as the pre- 'facelift' to me.

What happened to all the cheap lease deals?

I know we're not allowed to criticise this car, but it's so utterly bland... I could never spend so much money on something so ordinary.

I'm sure it's very competent, but so is virtually every new car on the market these days.

It depends on whether you want to be "look at me!" or want "Speak softly and carry a big stick". Personally I rather like the Q-car looks.

Each to their own, and all that.

But it's not a Q car as most people know what it is and the young, scruffy driver has almost certainly rented it. It doesn't speak softly with silly, excessively farty exhausts, nor does it carry a big stick as it's not that quick either.

My £500 Saab with an £80 remap and exhaust would give it a run for its money.
