Allow me to demonstrate...
Picture NOT PhotoShopped (dragged straight from Honest John).
Still think it looks OK?
I suppose they were designing it for the common scenario of short driver and tall rear passenger?Picture NOT PhotoShopped (dragged straight from Honest John).
Still think it looks OK?

Rather unfair to compare the handsome-looking Mondeo to the car above it.
The A5 Sportback came first...But the Mondeo always looks badly proportioned in real life. They're very under-wheeled which doesn't help the bloated appearance.
The original A5 Sportback is a decent looking car - not really a coupe, more a large hatch version of the A4. But, as someone else has said, it has aged very well.
I'll also come out as a fan of the A7. In the metal, they're fabulous.

For clarity, isn't this an Astra Coupe? Anything else is surely a hatchback.
I figured rules for coupe were 2dr, and boot-lid that opens without rear window i.e no hatch. I see a fair fe cars on here that I'd class at hatchbacks.

2 doors
Boot lid with out glass....
... IS the most widely used definition.
However, you will still get some oddities.
Mk1 Escort for example, was available as a 2 door or 4 door saloon or 2 door estate.
None of the RS versions (Mexico, RS1600, Twin cam, RS2000) were called coupes.
I therefore think its really a combination of 2 Doors, boot and rear window shape.
I've never viewed whether the glass opens with the boot as a defining feature of a coupe. There are two door saloons and there are three door hatches which are not coupes; there are also coupes with both types of boot.
It would be a bit odd to consider things like the Corvette and 944 to not be coupes.

That's probably a fairly decent way to define a coupe - still loads of rule-breakers though, like the BMW 6er Gran Coupe (it's actually a 4-door) and the Mazda RX-8 (also a 4-door). 2 doors
