Any sane person wouldn't deliberately run someone over either.

The problem in this country is no fear of consequences, and here's why:

UK police (on the odd occasion you see them patrolling the streets):

Foreign police:

While i agree with you to a degree and understand partly what you're getting at, I'm more than happy with the fact that Britain is not a gun-crazy nation like America and some other countries out there.

It took just one extreme case of a nut-job, who decided to massacre a load of children in school, for us to decide to put the use of guns to bed. Yet, across the water, innocent people are constantly being gunned down with nothing more than a slap on the wrist as a result.

Sorry to divert this thread some-what. I do agree that our justice system needs to be tougher in many scenarios, but as stated above, it's not the individual officers dishing out the punishment for such crimes.
My point was intimidation, not necessarily chasing crims down with guns. Bad choice of image I guess. The UK Police just aren't intimidating. Kids and scumbags have no fear of them, or respect for them. They are the public representation of the law, and we barely see any of them..... unless they're out trying to catch speeders.

Next time you go to an aiport, even a UK one, and see a 6 foot 6 policeman with an MP5 round his chest. It's way more intimidating than the high vis wearing bobbies that frankly, don't look particularly fit and able to chase crims through gardens. I'm not advocating freedom to use guns, but certainly the coppers should be equipped with them. Or do we need a dozen cases of police being murdered in the line of the duty before anything gets done about it, in the UK's typical reactive way of doing things?

If dirty little scummers have no fear of the police or the justice system, we have no hope, and the honest folk will have no faith in them either, so vigilantism might increase.

My understanding is most police don't want to be armed?

If all officers carried guns then it would result in more criminals arming themselves 'just in case', and a spiral of escalation.

All it did was prevent law abiding people from pursuing a hobby. That nut should never have had his certificate renewed. Criminals don't waith months/years and pass several checks to acquire a gun legally.
This. I like guns, and detest being so limited on what I can own because years ago, someone who isn't me, somewhere I don't live, did something I wouldn't do.

One bloke died here, it was terrible, but if he had been armed, then the crims would have got shot at, probably shot back, people caught in the crossfire, people then have a gun handy and have a bad day, mental illness or dont lock it up properly, then get shot by their four year old or the four year old shoots themselves.

Why is tit the US doesnt have some kind of peaceful, crime and death free society, one that is much, much worse than ours in terms of violent deaths ? its because they have pretty much unfettered access to firearms, more guns = more gun deaths, its like putting out fires with petrol ffs.

Anyway, a whole different debate that has already been lost for gun enthusiasts over here.

On a different note, jesus, didnt realise how quick these S3's are ! admittedly with a tuning box but, shouldn't be surprised I guess as its the same as a Golf R and they tune very nicely and post some impressive acceleration times.

Yeah, safer in America, of course check out the respective gun deaths, adjust it for population and it is still ten times more, it is still a low chance of getting shot as a tourist, New York is one of the safer cities, it got cleaned up quite comprehensively from the eighties onwards, go and spend some time in Chicago or Detroit.

"National Service" is something that blokes in pubs rattle on about as the answer to every issue with anyone under 25, it isnt going to happen, that is not how warfare works these days, as we may find out pretty soon.

A gun *may* have acted as a deterrent or helped avoid this car getting stolen and this poor guy getting killed, but what of all the other situations where it would escalate it, a pub punch up that turns into a shoot out, a domestic that turns into a murder ? on balance the absence of guns is a blessing, but I can see how they may be useful, but the cost is too high for them to be widely available.

Its a moot point anyway and we arent allowed them and it isnt ever going to change.

I didn't say anything about the use of one for defending yourself, you weren't allowed that even when you were allowed handguns.

I just want one as, well, a toy, same as my cars or other hobby-related items. Just something I find interesting, and I don't like not being allowed one because some other bugger's actions ruined it for everyone.

You obviously mean the guy who sadly lost his life, too.

The world is full of such people ranging from eight to eighty.

Also bear in mind that many here suggesting they would let their cars go, also admit they would put up a fight should their family be put at risk.

Most here are the same in terms of fighting back, they just react at different times and for different reasons.

Indeed, and not everyone has a modified can of WD40 by the bed ready to fend off a frenzied attacker.

Yes,lots of big Merc's.

Awful for the family. If caught i hope the driver is given a long sentence, far too many let off due to 'sentencing guidelines' that need toughening up,but it is all an industry set up so the legal people can cash in.We should build more prisons not keep releasing them, but no money in that for the legal's so the crime continue's.

No, not sure how you come to that conclusion? By internet hardmen, I refer to all the posters spouting st about how if anyone tried it on they'll take them on with a samurai sword/wd40/pet wolf/etc...

No one knows how they'll react in that situation until it happens. Personally I'd like to think if it was me I'd stay out the way and let them take the car, but when the adrenaline kicks in who knows...?
