It gets very few people, aside from car journalists, talking about it. Your average joe customer that wants a top-spec sporty model of a car won't care than it drove round some tarmac ring in less than 8 minutes. They'll buy it on equipment and looks.
But we are talking about it now. I dont give a st from Sport Auto from their test of the old Type-R
Was 2 weeks for the 2nd time to ring in mine, did a 8.45 with a total of 15 laps, with plenty to give still. So a "pro driver" only be able to improve 30 secs on that time is a joke.
He is just a typical german auto tester, just like the American where they always say their own countries brand is the best.

I'd be interested to see the 'real' time when it's reviewed in SportAuto. The 'old' one that allegedly did the 7min50sec could only muster an
8min15sec in the hands of Christian Gebhardt
who independntly managed a respectable
7min56sec lap in the Golf GTI Clubsport S which was only 6s off the official VW time at that point.
Christian is a very quick driver, and having tried myself the other week in my own Focus RS, I would only just have managed to beat his 8min06sec lap if I'd had it clear. As it was, the best I could get was an
8min12sec haemorrhaging time at Adenau Forst behind a hesitant TTS and M3.
I have no doubt in my mind that the best an 'old' production Type R could manage would be around an 8min10sec. A fair way shy of it's alleged record.
In reality, I guess the new car will probably be similar to the 8min06sec of the Focus. Which is still monumentally quick....

Assuming you lapped on a tourist day then you were nearer to a minute slower than the typical German auto tester, as you weren't driving full laps. Was 2 weeks for the 2nd time to ring in mine, did a 8.45 with a total of 15 laps, with plenty to give still. So a "pro driver" only be able to improve 30 secs on that time is a joke.

Maybe try to understand the difference between your tourist driving and a full NS lap first before bhing around about SportAuto who have some of the best drivers a car magazine could wish for testing on the Ring. As to their presumed bias towards German cars, maybe check the article where they preferred an Exige V6S over a Cayman GT4....
