$100 to rotate the wheels/tyres after the bds have to take the wheels off anyway to inspect the brakes.

Sorry to ask this now, but why the hell did you buy a diesel if you only do a few thousand miles a year?

Thanks for explaining that it's the old model. Unfortunately for you, the older model diesel was very prone to issues. There was a thread on here years ago by someone who had major problems with their diesel. It's all summarised in the HJ link below:

http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/mazda/6-2008/...

Mazda build good petrols and maybe better diesels now. The older models were awful in diesel guise though.

Hope you get it fixed ok.
The car has been faultless. Its just the 60k service thats expensive. I'll find a specialist that will be cheaper. All our mileage is long distance. We drive the car maybe once a week to the shops a mile away but the rest of the mileage is a minimum of 50-70 motorway miles each way. We visited a few dealers and got the best experience from Mazda. Drove the car and fell in love with the gearbox (Short, sharp and precise) and boot size. . Didn't care about diesel vs petrol tbh. It was the best car in our price range. It's a family car though. I have motorbikes for fun. My next car will be a v8 though biggrin

I agree that there is nothing wrong with a Mazda. I owned my 3 petrol for six years. The only thing that really went wrong was the battery dying and the air con failing. Neither left me stranded at the side of the road as the battery failed whilst the car was parked up at an airport for a week (and my fiancée left an internal light on). However, the old diesels can be a pain.

Nothing you can do about it now though, so I'll shut up. smile

Yeah, see if you can get it done by a specialist for cheaper. Just keep an eye on the other potential issues raised in the HJ link above.

I've been looking at the 6's as a cheap runabout. More room than the 3, which would help us a lot.

We'll let them off with the occasional wankel.

My DiL has just bought a petrol 3, it's a very nice car, lovely to drive.

A guy I know entrusted his 2013 Range Rover V8 petrol to his 21 year old son (as you do) as he had bought a new one. Driving down the motorway a couple of weeks ago and the dashboard lit up telling him to stop due to lack of oil. Son decides to try and make it to the next slip road and stop then with obvious results.

Guy Salmon have quoted him £24000 for a new engine!!!!

Nothing wrong with a wankel if it's looked after properly. smile Different kettle of fish to a normal engine. hehe

Is the 3 in question one of the new ones? I have driven a few newer models and they seem quite good compared to the older ones.

No it's a 2013 1.6 petrol on a 63 plate so pre facelift but it's a nice looking car, seems very well built, well specced and good to drive.

Who me ?

Rix- tip- find a local , or not so far Indie ,and get a quote. When I had my cambelt done on my little VAG oil burner price at Stealer was xxx. Mention that a place only 50 miles down the road quoted over £100 less, and surprise, the price dropped to match. NOthing like a bit of healthy competition to wake the Stealers up.

That's exactly what I'm doing. Indy has quoted £139 so asked audi to price match. Being very hesitant and they need to know exactly what the indy will be doing. Turned it back to audi and asked exactly what they would do.

I had already asked audi to confirm whether the pollen filter needed doing as my service book suggests every 2 years. They said that was correct so I'm not sure why the quoted for it on a 1 year old car! I'm really not sure if they are deliberately trying to scam extras out of people or are just incompetent.

Anyway this is what they do....

For the price of £454.40 our service includes:

Inspection service

Oil change

Parts

Labour

VAT

For the £485.75 service this will include all of the above plus a pollen filter change.

Below is the full details of what the inspection part of the service includes:

Air filter clean

Light and horn function check

Vehicle road test

Bodywork check for damage

Windscreen & wash/wipe system check

Wiper blade condition & park system check

Headlight washer system check

Mirror check

Top-up of screen wash

Door locks & bonnet catch check and grease

Auxiliary drive belt condition & tense check

Battery check

Coolant level check

Clutch check

Hydraulics fluid level & power steering fluid check

Front and rear brake pads/discs condition check

Engine, gearbox, steering & suspension check

Exhaust system visual check for leaks & damage

Under body visual checks for damage, loose parts & for security

Tyre condition & pressure check

£450 to change the oil, and give it a quick walk-around and shake the air filter... You can bet the wheels won't even come off for the brake pad check - it'll be through the spokes or from the back while it's in the air.

Really don't understand how dealers get away with it, especially on expensive cars. I've serviced/maintained/fixed kit massively more complex and expensive than a car, while being paid less than average wage.

You can bet that the monkey doing the work on your car is not that well paid, so the majority of the cost appears between the service bay, and the till.

EV's will be what kills off the service industry. There really is very very little that needs doing on an EV, and even the least mechanically minded is going to question why their dust caps need checking by a garage.

You could replace the oil and filter change in the list above with something like 'charging system test' and most of the rest of it would still apply to an EV.

The item that irks me with VAG - and this has happened with different brands and different garages - is being told "the a/c is overdue for service" when it's not a listed service item.

My local (small) Ford dealer charges £139.00 for a full service, any car (within reason) up to 2 litre, inc all oils and filters.

If you run a Bentley it ain't going to be cheap.

When my Disco3 was 3 years old it went to Jaguar/Landrover for its MOT.

It failed on one of its tyres. They quoted £350 to change it.

I took it to a garage I knew that fitted and balanced the same Pirelli tyre for £100.

Thing is, idiots are happy to pay these prices when they are not counting the pennies.

OP that's a pretty scandalous cost for what is frankly just a cursory oil and inspection service - the same thing will start with a 1 at the likes of Ford/Renault/Citroen/Peugeot etc etc.

How else can they keep their glass palaces going for Audi/BMW/Merc though?

I assume you don't know that the BRZ / GT86 engine is not the old WRX engine, but a new design.
No not the WRX but the Subaru's R version
It's an EJ20-based design, so nothing fundamentally different like bore spacing etc.

The service manual makes it pretty clear that it'd be an easy job on a big, roomy engine bay like an Impreza/Legacy/Outback etc, but because they've gone for a low, compact engine bay (as befits the design) it means you have to remove things like the exhaust manifolds, ECU, front subframe etc to get access and drop the engine to clear the chassis legs.

local ford dealer quoted me £350 for a first service on a diesel Mondeo,

parts are pennies on trade iirc a full filter kit comes in around £30 air oil fuel and pollen (ford don't change the fuel or pollen at first service) and granted oil on the mk5 is a bit pricier but not enough to justify the cost.

had mine in for some a fuel pump replacement under warranty and got it back with 8 litres of oil in it frown hence I love my indy

£550 for a first service at 12,00 miles on a mundane Mazda5 Diesel. If it were exotica or premium then I could understand but the stupid diesel needed the valve cover taken off to check/set the clearances and the associated new gasket etc. Compare that to the £112 for the Zafira it replaced.

I used to pay £120 for an oil change on my mondeo 10 years ago.
