Brother and sister-in-law's 2016 Fiesta Zetec-S diesel has disappeared from the lay-by over the road from their house overnight.

Obviously we hear tons of stories on here about cars being stolen, but it always seems to be ones with keyless entry where the crims have reprogrammed a new key to start the car, either by the OBD port or whatever.

Their Fiesta, however, was not keyless go. It requires a physical key to start the engine and they still have both of the keys - their house has not been touched! They've owned the car from new, so nothing funny going on there either. There's no sign of any broken glass and the car was parallel parked with cars in front and behind. Am I right in thinking that it's basically impossible to hot wire a modern car like this and so the only way to steal it would be with a cloned key? I've asked my S-I-L when it was last taken to a dealer and she thought it had, but wasn't sure exactly when. Bloody annoying though - it's a lease car and they don't have GAP, plus one of them now can't get to work.

No.

At the very outside, it can be put on skates, rolled sideways, and onto a flatbed - or even just hiabed on.

Sorry yes, I did mean to say that's another alternative. It's a pretty built-up area, though, so you'd have to be pretty brave / stupid to do something so noisy as to low-loader it away in the middle of the night.

Put DVLA or AA stickers on the side, and just watch everybody ignore it.

Sorry to hear about this. Better than having them break into the house or weapons and stuff. Most ins is new for old in the 1st yr so they may get away with this.

Possibly NOT if the car is leased unfortunately.
YMMV obviously.

I am sorry to hear there Ford Fiesta was stolen.

From what I have heard criminals are now specialising in specific make and models of car to steal, by basically buying the diagnostic equipment and blank car keys for that model of car.

Not sure on the specifics on how they do it with Ford Fiestas but I believe they use the kits the dealerships etc would use to gain access to cars where the owners had lost there keys etc.

Sorry if what I am saying is wrong, just remember reading about it a while ago.

Was it definitely parked legally and hasn't been towed to the local compound?

its hard to steal cars with keys, with out the keys these days.
But its easy enough to just tow it away, people don't question anything unfortunately.
Id put money on it being taken like this, they can work the key out later on once they've got the car away

There was another thread recently about a Fiesta stolen without the keys, sounds like it's a thing now.

I would at least give the impound a call

Happened to me once. Thought I'd parked the car legally (it was in a bay and had the right permit, but OH, who filled said permit forgot to put the number plate on the permit.... don't see why it matters, its was a single use, 24 hour permit for one car. Its not like you could share it around. Anyway...)

Woke up in the morning, went to pack the car. Gone. Had no idea where or who took it. I think I rang the non-emergency number for the police and then they eventually found it in Newham Councils impound.

Wonder how they did it..... I would suspect winched away , but no alarms??

Not exactly a high value car to steal, and spare parts aren't worth much - how odd.

Yeah, if it was parked up in a layby it's quite possible it had outstayed its welcome? bearing in mind they're meant for temporary stopping in, not parking up indefinitely?

Thanks for the replies so far. Definitely not parked illegally - it's just a lay-by for the houses nearby and there's no restrictions at all. Will keep this thread updated if I find out any more about it. Does seem weird though - as said, it's not a particularly desirable car!

This.

Takes about 10 seconds and it's gone.

The key bit is just a key: it can still be "barrelled" and started with a screwdriver.

Literally says in the title it isn't keyless.
