Back in the 80's my car was stolen from my drive on a summer's evening, at about 7pm on a busy residential street. I was sitting in my living room about 10ft from the car.

The car had an engine part removed so was impossible to start without someone work in on the car first.

The police said they will have simply rolled it off the drive and pulled it into a truck.

No it can't.
I'm a locksmith and auto electrician, so it would take me about 10 minutes or so to get into it, and another 10 minutes or so to make it run - that's with specialist kit and training, so a screw driver just isn't going to make the grade.
