I was lucky enough to get a ride in one of these things last year, late to catch a plane from Zurich. Now it may have been the three turbo version but it was definitely 4oo bhp. I asked the driver just how quick it was and to my fellow passengers horror, the driver adjusted the set up to a sport mode where the sat Nav display transforms into two big dials, one for power, and one for torque. Then he floored in on what was suddenly a twisty section of motorway. Very fast. He explained calmly the benefits of x dive while we prayed. Definitely special, but sadly one for the continent with the arrival of new speeding fines. The German driver was wonderfully nuts and owned the limo company, great guy.

I have made a number of enquires regarding anything above the 530d and it was not good news.

This was my question to BMW Germany on 19th Jan 2017

Please can you advise if the new 2017 BMW 5 series (G30) will be offered with option of 535d or 540d or 550d power in the UK. I am looking to make my new car purchase soon and I will hold over if BMW are to release these models in the future. The only offer at the moment is the 530d. Regards Peter

My question was bounced to BMW UK for a response.

The answer: on the 26th Jan 2017

Good afternoon Peter

Thanks for your email about the new BMW 5 series.

I can confirm at the moment that the series does not come as a 530d, 54d or 550d power at the moment. I will keep your notes on record and if there is any update on this you will be contacted.

I hope this information helps and if you need any further assistance please get back in touch.

Kind regards

Following the above from BMW UK

I have recently test driven and ordered a 530d after three dealers all confirmed the same having all spoken to BMW UK. On the basis of this I have placed my order for the 530d but being on individual paint it is not being built until late July so I have lots of time to change the spec. On the strength of discovering this P.H news feature yesterday 27th April 2017. I contacted my dealer and shared this with them. The dealer double checked with BMW UK and the answer was as follows:

Peter
This is a response from BMW UK 27th April 2017

“I'm afraid it isn't coming to the UK so don't wait for it. The 530d xDrive is essentially as quick as the old 535d in case you have a returning F10 customer looking for the same performance.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
My Thoughts:

The P.H feature states ...... " As for right-hand drive, we'll find out as soon as possible"....... I think any future news from P.H and those of who are waiting for the 550d in the UK won't be a good one.

My dealer is keeping a very keen eye on this situation for me

^^ BMW UK are rubbish!

However, I guess they have access to the F10 sales figures - three litre diesels aren't exactly common and 535ds are indeed hens teeth which suggests they are being led by buyers, sadly.

Anymore news on this?

Is the 540d definitely not appearing on our shores?

Our local dealer has been pretty clear there won't be anything faster than the 540i for the UK.

Apparently the 540i has very poor range which is a shame.....

I've also had a good moan that we aren't getting more powerful versions - I'm incredibly disappointed by an F31 335d touring we bought - it is not at all quick and their limitations on powerful models are really disappointing.

I'm looking at a Panamera or A8 4.2 Tdi as quick, huge fuel tanks so massive range which matters far more than MPG.

Excuse the laziness - but the 540i has the 3.0 single turbo? I would have expected the range to be reasonable (400 miles plus) - I have had a M240i xDrive same engine (iirc) and the range has been great, for the admittedly completely different car...

I also have a 750d G30 that i ll be getting a blast in for a few days. That I am looking forward to!

What?????

My F31 335d is insanely quick

So much so anything longer than a few seconds of loud pedal would have me using the bus for a year or so if any plod were around

Im just staggered that you think yours isnt quick!!

TBH whilst its doubtless a superb overtaking weapon Ive actually decided that the performance on offer just isnt accessible for the vast majority of the time on a public road

Is your daily driver a Veyron or Apollo launch vehicle??

Cheers

I agree. The 335d is loopy fast for an every day diesel estate. It's stupid fast just generally IMO.

Perhaps his weekend car is a 918 / LaFerrari? laugh

That's interesting - I was told it's a 25mpg car in real driving.

I presume 750d is LHD only?

Yes, it is. I get US Specc'ers here and mainland European versions, some lovely lovely cars.

On a side note the Yanks don't realize how good they have it. M4 Coupe, here 61,540.00$ - Italian Version 97655.00$......................but that is another thread altogether

My F31 335d is insanely quick

So much so anything longer than a few seconds of loud pedal would have me using the bus for a year or so if any plod were around

I've posted on the BMW forum about this particular 335d being slow as......in fact about as slow as a 120d.

I've driven the same engine in a 640d coupe which I had for 2 years, a 640d gran coupe that the garage lent me, and a 335d saloon which was also a loan car. I thought all of these were quick enough but our touring is slow as. Ours is having investigative work done next week as the dealer claims there's nothing wrong with it and thinks we're maniacs!

If you look at say 60-100 mph tires, a 335d is around 7 seconds and a GTR around 4 seconds, so there's plenty of scope for faster models than the 530d.

Ultimate Driving Machine - only if you live in a left hand drive market.....
