A Corsa from Sixt is £13 a day last time I used them, you need to pick it up and drop it off though

You can get this for £900 locally, no need to get insurance as they'll deliver it.

When you get back off your trip, wait for the sun to come out, give it a quick once over with the auto-glym, drop the roof and dump it at the end of the driveway with a £1100ovno price tag.
That's not the worst idea smile

This whole thread, and the problem that is being discussed here reminds me, once more, how fking glad I am that I don't live in the UK any more: Jesus H. Christ, what have things come to when you can't even go on holiday without having to worry about things like this ?
Where has the England that I left in 1983 gone? The last time I visited my people in Huddersfield, I felt like a stranger on an alien planet.....

Thieves knock on doors to establish if anyone is home. A hire car will be no use in these circumstances. You may as well just leave a light on and a radio playing

And it's had the all important camPbelt change. Common issue with the hairdressing owners of these.

You do realise that the only "detail" that isn't actually in your original post is your name, and that's on your profile...?

Taking a step back it does seem quite tragic, but as a number of houses have been burgled in my immediate area and also a number of cars stolen you need to think about these things.

I don't want things to get out of hand, we usually have a spare car that is on the drive but we no longer have that so it'll be the first time that we'll be away and have an empty drive.

Just thinking out loud really.

As mentioned, neighbours cars are not an option. I'll follow up on a couple of the cheap hire car places, but was also interested in what others do.

Thanks!

or rent a better car, leave yours at home, all the wear and tear is on the hire car then! I honestly dont think having a car on the drive will make any difference at all, a cheap IP camera with alarm or a cheap burglar alarm (i got a yale one, its good) would be much better deterrent, and you would know about a break in. You're obviously a bit paranoid (me too) I have CCTV and a alarm and the whole lot cost less that £300, its there 24/7 monitoring whats going on and acting as a bit of a deterrent to boot , do it properly dont waste money on a hire car,

I understand no one wants to be burgled, and there are necessary but reasonable precautions that are to be taken. However, worth remembering we live in one of the safest countries in the world, and statistically the chances of being burgled are very slim. Things really are not that bad. Don't loose sleep over it, and I certainly would bother renting a car to leave in the driveway. Any self respecting burglar will knock on the door to establish vacancy first anyway. They might even nick the rental car if you leave them the keys smile

Would it not be easier/cheaper to leave your car in the drive, rent one to go to the airport, drop it off. Rent car when you are back, drop it off at local hire place.
That's what I usually do as it is cheaper than the airport car park for a week. And you have no risk of dings on your P&J when you are away.

Cost neutral and you tackle the problem.

Or am I missing somethingconfused

Steal a car and leave it on your drive

When you get back, torch it and claim you found it like that when you returned

You're worried about cars being stolen.

Your car is not going to be there for a week.

So to prevent the car that isnt there being stolen, you're going to hire a car and leave it outside the house instead.

+1

What an utterly bizarre solution to the "problem".

As if one way hire cars with surcharges are cheaper than parking at an airport.....

Don't you have any friends with a horny teenager living at home? One who's recently passed? Give them the keys for the week to park on your drive and live in your house.

Just make sure you clean the bed sheets in the master afterwards. hehe
Make this a Sticky then........

No, I'm worried about my house looking empty when several homes around us have been burgled.

spend the money on cameras and floodlights instead. might cost a bit more than a weeks cheapo hire but you'll still have em afterwards.
