How do they get away with this - car insurance quotes
Discussion
So my car insurance is due for renewal, each year another case of bend over and take it. 10 years, never claimed, last 5 years the price has never dropped...
I go through tghe comparison sites, and Hastings ticks the box for 'quality : price' trade off I am looking for...£560. So I click from the fresh quote to Hastings page, and suddenly I am treated with extra 'add on prices'....£20 set up fee (as opposed to a £12.50 over the phone one, that I am being saved from...!?) then a myseteriously 8quid add on from no where. So from the fresh price comparison site £560 I am suddenly up to £588 for no legitmate reason????!!!!
Fresh quote from comparison site, price I am ok with (but not happy with...!)
then jumps u....tells me there is a £20 set up fee (well it isnt fking £560 then is it?) - but then another £8 is added mysteriously!?

I have insured my car with Hastings for the last few years and it has always been under £500.
My renewal came through the other day for £600 and thought nothing if it as they are always more in the hope you let it auto renew.
Checked my emails and the meerkats emailed me saying Hastings where the cheapest at £300. Half their own quote.
Go through to check the details and they were all fine so refreshed the list and it dropped to just under £300.
I called them up to cancel current policy and the chap asked why I wasnt renewing to which I explained I was but as a new customer as it was more than half the price of their renewal quote.
It makes me laugh when your road tax is more than your insurance though.

Just been through the insurance wringer with G/F's car. Comparing Meerkats gave LV as the cheapest at £405. G/F phones up to double check and is told the cheapest quote for the same car over the phone is £650. No, they didn't match the price given by the adorable meerkat wallahs for the same policy, despite the fact she's already insured with them for another car.
'Extortion' springs to mind.

Mine is taking the piss big time. full no claims, no points etc, no change of circs from last year. fully comp was 480 quid, this year ive just today received my renewal quote £1780 !!! what the juddering fk !!! not a chance. been with the company last 7 years too and this is how they treat a good customer who pays in full and never claimed a bean. went on compare the meercat and found tesco cover for 490 but that includes legal , windscreen cover , courtesy car and breakdown that my last one didnt. starting to think they make it up as they go along or just have a random number generator and send it out while pissing themselves laughing.

I'm dreading my renewal in June. Due entirely to my postcode, I pay a ridiculous sum to insure a 1.8 Mondeo.
I drive around 4-5,000 miles a year, have no at fault accidents and I have full no claims.

Mine's the same, 2.0TDCi Estate which came in at £245 this time. Similar mileage and in London I drive around 4-5,000 miles a year, have no at fault accidents and I have full no claims.

It is called "incremental pricing" strategy and many industries have worked out that a lower "start" price means someone is far more likely to pay a higher "end" price... and still come away thinking they got a bargain.
Easyjet was one of the pioneers of such pricing (copied from American firms). They discovered that someone who "starts" with an "anchor" price of, say, £30, and ends up paying £100 for a flight after all the incrmenetal add-ons, will still think the price is a "good" one because the first price they saw is the price that sticks in the mind. Yes, most people really are that stupid.

Just renewed the insurance on the old X-type - £98 fully comp (for a year)
Sadly, one of the few benefits of getting older...
Chances are it will start to go up as you get older. Sadly, one of the few benefits of getting older...
Even after all these years, the ways of car insurance are still sometimes hard to fathom....
