Tayside Police in Perth had a J reg Sapphire cossie for a few years back in the mid/early 90's. I had a Capri while all my mates had Nova SR's, Astra GTE's etc, loads of us had been enthusiastically driving about and been spotted but as i was the slowest they pulled me!
While i was in the back of the cossie on the Northbound dual carriageway 3 of my mates passed on the southbound fast lane oblivious to the Police being there, you could only make out the tops of the cars due to the armco barrier but the noise was epic! The coppers weren't best pleased but there was nothing they could do!

It was about 1991 and I was on the M40 northbound around Oxford. Im in the middle lane overtaking something in the nearside lane and something doing at least 120mph dives onto the hard shoulder to get round us as there was something overtaking me in the outside lane. A black Lotus Carlton is also flying up the outside lane, I assumed trying to race whatever the hell had done the horrendous undertake. It pulls up along side me waiting for the outside lane to clear, so I glance across to see two uniformed officers up front. The outside lane clears and the copper in the passenger seat turns to me and gives me a cheeky wave bye bye and the Carlton, already doing at least 80mph leaves two long black stripes behind it as it disappears like the Millennium Falcon doing a light speed jump in front of me. The world was a better place when the BIB used to catch crims in a near 200mph four door supercar.

They even had them as patrol cars at one time

That's awesome!
I remember Warwickshire Police had two 4x4 Sapphires. K121KKV and K122KKV. They also had a silver Lotus Carlton. All unmarked. Gits wink

In Northumbria they had Sapphire Cossies and a few liveried Escort Cosworths.

I have a vague memory of one getting nicked by the local naughty boys while it was parked outside court.

As for being caught in a persuit, in 2010 I was a radio journalist following the hunt for Raoul Moat in rural Northumberland. Me and a colleague were about to pull into a narrow country road in a 1 Series BMW when several police cars passed by at speed. Once they'd passed we turned into the road only to have a silver Met? BMW tailgating us. There were a couple of cop cars behind him and the road was too twisty to safely overtake. Like the OP described, hand signals urged us to get a move on. My colleague was driving and with a huge grin on his face we cracked on until the road widened and straightened and the rest of the convoy passed.

I wasn't watching the Speedo but he tells me we were doing 110 when they overtook us on the straight road.
