RE: NIO EP9 sets new Nurburgring record
Discussion
Sounds identical to the whine of a straight cut gearbox. Which is a noise I've always liked. What is confusing is no rev variation/gear change, which distracts from the sensation of speed until a few seconds later; when you realise your going much faster than you'd expect from 1st gear!

I assumed it was straight cut gears making the god awful noise which would explain why it sounds like that! J4CKO said:
We only know about all that stuff because IC engines are a bodge to get us 100 or so years to viable electric transport, like the crackle on the start of a record the noise from an IC engine is a downside we have turned into a feature, like Coco Pops turning the "milk choclately", future generations wont know or care about that any more than you care about the bond between a horse rider and their steed, it is totally just what you are used to.
It is a device for moving people and stuff around and it should be quiet and efficient, you shoudlnt need loads of skill to do it, we have to remember we are the weird ones here, the ones that see driving a car beyond its utility, we get too involved, some old Doris in her Jazz may enjoy it just as much for the feeling of freedom, movement, seeing the world pass by and the method of moving the vehicle becomes irrelevant.
I welcome the EV and things like this can only accelerate its adoption, I dont know why people go on about "appliances", cars are utility objects first and foremost, all the nonsense we put around them cant take that away, I love cars and engines, but I can see where it is going and it is the needs of the many rather than us oddballs that will drive it, EV's, though they currently have a few downsides are otherwise just better in every way for doing the purpose they are intended for, the completely inferior power delivery of an IC engine is not a good argument.
We will be dead and gone, our cars will be museum pieces or stuff rolled out for Sunday morning and shows, the vast majority of day to day traffic will be electric, the world will be quieter and cleaner, energy will go further, cars will have less downtime for maintenance and be safer, all very valid issues to solve based on todays roads.

How many laps can it do? With 1MW motor and what 2x40kWh batteries(?);1 or 2 laps?
Yawn. How many 7 minute laps can any car do? In any case, how many consecutive 7 minute laps would any driver want to do? Battery replacement takes 8 mins according to the website.Edited by fblm on Wednesday 17th May 04:54

lol, name me one petrol car which can only do one 7 minute lap then run out of fuel.most people enjoy going out on track for more than 7 minutes at a time too, the idea of having to come back into the pits after every 7 minutes and recharging a full battery before you can go out is a complete ball ache.

Over 130 in the N24, NS and GP combined. 8 minutes great, so then you can go out and do another lap, then what? This car just makes no sense as either a race car or a track day car. I love it but it's virtually pointless. I do wonder how many of the naysayers have any experience of EVs whatsoever? Of the tiny minority that has, how many are capable of a 7-minute lap in ANYTHING? None, I'd bet. All these people saying 'boring' would give their left bk for a hot lap of the 'ring in the NIO or any other Hyper-EV and we all know it.
I totally get the people who say the noise id a factor. However...
I'm a petrol head and have owned some lovely cars over the years - mainly BMW M division stuff. You name it I've owned or driven it.
Ive never owned a true supercar - closest is my 997 Turbo. But Ive driven quite a few having a very wealthy mate.
His latest toy is a Model S P100D which Ive had over the weekend.
I must say that the difference in watching and listening to a video of a fast EV is boring but by god all that fades away when driving one. The rate of acceleration is undescribable. It's uncomfortably, obscenely fast. JUst utterly, utterly brutal.
I'd find it hard to believe any true speed freak would not be blown away.
In terms of delivering high quality performance then it's like comparing a C90 cassette to an MP3 file.
Once the mainstream manufacturers catch up with tesla and start delivering high quality and slick looks as part of the package then we are in for a treat
The problem Ive got now is that any ICE car I own or are for sale are just slow and cumbersome in comparison
