RE: Volkswagen Up GTI - official
Discussion
VW launch a light, cheap, quick, simple, fun car.
Pistonheads: It isn't light enough, cheap enough, quick enough, simple enough, or fun enough
...and it isn't as good as my 10 year old 3 grand AMG/MX5/M5/RS
You guys
I'm pretty sure an algorithm could be written to replace about 80% of comments on these forums and nobody would be able to tell the difference

3 cyls are ace, its a tiny car, a 4 cyl probably wouldn't fit, they all have three cyls in the Up range.
Will probably give it a more sporty sound as well, les face it, smaller VW 4 cyls generally arent super sporty having driven a cooking Polo a while back, it had an engine but I cant remember anything about it apart from it being wholly unremarkable, we have two three cyls, the C1 and Fiesta, both sound "unconventional", the C1 better than the Fiesta, kind of normal car with a hint of something eastern bloc seventies style, maybe air cooled, not unlike our old Fiat 500 in that way you really are aware when its running and cant mistake it for other cars.

What he said! 3 cyl cars sound like half a Porsche
It would have been nice if they'd have widened the body and given it a wider track, like they did on the Lupo GTI.
But I'm sure it will be a great car nethertheless, albeit there is room for a Up! R, with said wider track/Body and 160 bhp

I wouldn't say 15 grand is cheap. Pistonheads: It isn't light enough, cheap enough, quick enough, simple enough, or fun enough

£15k?! How are VW getting so little power out of there 1.0 triple tubby?
I'm pretty sure they could make it produce any number between 40-200bhp if they wanted, its not that they cant make it more powerful, they dont want to.Emissions, insurance, fuel consumption are all considerations I guess

This is my thoughts on it as well, seems like it is deliberately down on power to not impact Polo GTI sales. I would expect a half decent remap to get a safe 150 BHP out of the same engine as long as VW haven't gone marginal on the stock clutch.115 BHP and much closer to 1000kg in GTI spec with nice seats and other (heavy) electric goodies to plump out the GTI spec makes it just about warm hatch levels. Seems to be way down on power compared to the hot Fiat 500s.

I'm not a VW fan at all, but I like to give credit where it's due and this thing looks mega. I've already told my brother to get his name down for one as soon as he can (he wants a sporty super mini)Pistonheads: It isn't light enough, cheap enough, quick enough, simple enough, or fun enough

Potentially quite a lot of back to basics fun. I think that it's a bit too heavy though.
About 100kg more than an old Mk 1 Golf GTI.
Maybe VW could offer a stripped down version? (Wind up windows, less trim, etc etc)
I doubt wind up windows save any weight and have you been an up!?About 100kg more than an old Mk 1 Golf GTI.

They'd struggle to put less trim in. Half the interior is painted metal bodywork!
ETA: it is that way on my sister in law's Skoda Citigo. I haven't been in an up! so it may well be different
Not so sure...
Lupo GTI had a revy naturally aspirated 1.6 which has an official figure of 125bhp (or ps?), but in reality most owners can get that figure at the from wheels!
What's more instead of a body kits like this Up GTI, Lupo GTI had its own unique aluminum front and rear wings which have four wider wheel arches to accommodate the wider front and rear tracks. At the front, it also has its own headlights design which is different from standard Lupos, that also applys to front bumper and the aluminum bonnet. One other thing most people don't know is that It has a magnesium rear hatch which is borrowed from Lupo 3L model.
Inside Lupo GTI it has its own dash/dial design which again is different from any other Lupo models. It isn't some fancy material replacement like what M cars or AMG cars compare to normal BMWs or Mercs. It was a completely different design only for the GTI model...
I still think the best VW GTIs are Golf MK1, MK2 GTIs and Lupo GTI.

Are those rear drums?
As a Lupo GTI owner, I'm not impressed. The Lupo stood out by all the subtle (different body shell for the rear arches, for example) changes that were made. This is just wheels and suspension...
You clearly aren't a "proper" VW owner. Half of the "builds" are wheels and suspension. As a Lupo GTI owner, I'm not impressed. The Lupo stood out by all the subtle (different body shell for the rear arches, for example) changes that were made. This is just wheels and suspension...
