I'd forgotten how deflating it is buying a new/nearly new car. I saw 4 over the weekend across a few dealers.

Most were 16 plates with 1-8K miles.

The dealer in Wilmslow were beyond rude. I nearly didn't view the car after the first phone call, whereby the salesman was clearly getting irked when I declined interest in the wheels insurance, gap insurance (I'd already told him I was a cash buyer) - he raised his voice when I refused the tyre insurance. Presumably with each time I declined interest in something he could see commission slipping away with each "no". The car wasn't prepped, which I didn't mind as it's at least an honest example, but every panel felt like sandpaper, and there far too many marks for a car of its age. On pointing one out to the salesman, which was deep enough to get a fingernail in, he responded by wetting his finger and rubbing (grit) vigourously into the mark in an attempt to prove it'll come out. Upon him asking what it'd take for me to buy the car, he spoke to his boss in front of me, declined and followed up with 'go buy from elsewhere'. I was pretty stunned at how bad they were. I wasn't even offered a seat upon entering the place, instead being literally ushered out of the door to see a car covered in bird sh*t and 12 months worth of dirt, and general aggression and rudeness to run of the mill questions. I know the dealer's in a nice bit of the world and perhaps they're used to people coming in, paying up and disappearing.

Then on to Birmingham. The dealer was friendly enough and the car was unmarked on the outside. All was promising. Until we open the door to find glass fragments in the sill. The car had likely had its window put through - presumably whilst on the forecourt, a main road in the centre - which wasn't the end of the world. However the door had clearly been opened and closed numerous times with the glass fragments in the sill as there was deep pitting to the paint in the sill and around the seal. The dealer claimed to be unaware of the glass and break in until I pointed it out to them. Who knows.

They had another example with less than 2K miles. This one had a deep scrape to the skirt and surface scuffs on the sills from somebody who presumably wore heels. It was up at £14K and they wouldn't budge a penny.

Then on to another dealer but the car had sold when I got there. They did offer a brand new ST-3 for £17K though and 0% finance, and that's without trying.

I had a quick view around one at a dealer this evening, 5 mins before they were closing, again it's up for £14K with 5K miles. This'll sound daft, but it had wind deflectors on, and perhaps I'd stereotypically thought it'd been owned by an 18 year old and wheelspun the last 5K miles from every traffic light. That said, the front tyres are originally and don't appear to be short of tread.

What struck me with just about every car I viewed is how people have allowed so much damage to occur to a year old car. Does nobody care anymore or take pride in looking after what is, at the end of the day, a lot of money for a single purchase?

I'm starting to think a pre-reg/new one is the way to go, and get my personal loan extended. There are new ones out there for around the £16K mark...
Sounds like you will only be happy with a pre-reg/new one.

There are roughly 25,000 of the cars on the roads so they are considered to be daily cars.
A lot of the cars are looked after on the Fiesta ST group on Facebook so just because you seen a couple in bad condition it doesn't mean all are.

However...when I viewed cars last August I went to Bootle Ford. There was an ST1 which was filthy. Bird st on the roof. Overpriced.

An ST2 which had bad curbing on 2 of the wheels. I don't see why they didn't sort the bad bits out but maybe they were selling the cars easily and having them not on show would have lessened the chances of selling them?

I ended up buying mine from Drivers of Prestatyn. Prepped well. Priced well. Good salesman.
Unsure if there was a nail in the tyre when I bought it but I had accrued one on the 50 mile journey home.

If you have the money then buy new/ pre reg. You know it has genuine miles but you will take a hit on the depreciation buying at £17,000.
The new ST is out next year so I think these will eventually sit at £8000 in 2/3 years time.

Are there any about to lease? I wish I had done so...

I'd buy an ST200 before a standard colour ST. I wouldn't mind changing up but it'd cost me £5000.

Yep, aware they're not all going to be like that, but not a good start. As said, people must be happy to buy a year old car with damage which illustrates the car hasn't been looked after.

I'm happy to buy a used one, a year old, with under 10K miles, for around £14K. But I'll buy it based on condition. It'd odd there's so many white 16 plate ST-3s around with such mileage, especially from Bristol Street Motors. They can't be 1 year leases, surely?

I'm a bit loathed to spend £17K on a new one knowing the arse will drop out of the value very quickly. At least with a year old model a chunk of that has already happened.

I'm not on Facebook so can't see that group.

I'll keep searching.

I've gone ahead and bought a new ST-3. A pre-reg 17 plate with 13 miles on it. Managed to get it for £16.6K.

Thanks. I can't think of any new car with the same kit, performance and will still do 40+ mpg for that sort of money.

A Cooper S would be around £20K for something similar.

Yes, its the best in class and a decent price too - a rarity these days.

What colour did you go for?

Dont forget to post pics when you get it!

Will do.

I've gone for white. The blue looked good too. But I wasn't interested in red or orange. And the dark wheels/tints on shadow black models didn't sit well. Plus I've never had a white car before!

I think white is a good choice. My sons Clio RS200 is white with the anthracite alloys and it looks fantastic. My BIL's previous Fiesta ST (1) was white and i loved it. Hes subsequently bought a blue ST3. Great cars!

We just picked one up from Trust in Wilmslow today, 15 plate ST2 for £12,495, the second car we have bought from there, the same salesman and found him to be very helpful.

Car is pretty much perfect, when we saw it first is was covered in crud, but they all were, as were are cars at home following the recent weather, everything was covered in sand, I washed the Astra that morning we were offering in PX, it had been done a couple of days previously but was a right mess, covered in sand, also, they are having major work done there so that cant help, being fair, turned up to collect it and it was immaculate.

Drove it tonight, brilliant fun, the handling is ridiculously good, they look brilliant and the seats are great, dont think you can do better for the money, downside would be the ride which is "busy" at low speed but makes more sense as speeds rise, gives so much confidence. Not ballistically quick but plenty to work with, a £332 Bluefin remap takes them to 230 ish bhp which I think it would cope with very well and give it the extra edge.

I think as a hot hatch it is as near to the dictionary definition/original blueprint as you can buy these days, took me back to my 80s hot hatch days, hint of MK2 Golf with a hint of Renault 5 power delivery.

Good thing with the 17 plate is that late 2015 they had a tweek to the rear suspension and the ride is apprently less crashy.
Can't comment on that because mine is a 2014 plate.

Make sure you two buy a disklok smile
Keyless entry is a PITA on these cars.

J4CKO Collins Performance is in Congleton so won't be too far from you. They would be my choice over bluefin.

To all the guys who have just bought one .... you'll love them! biggrin

I had a 15 plate ST3 for 2 years on lease and loved every minute of it (apart from the ride which was appalling on badly surfaced city roads). I now have a Scirocco R which is a great car in it's own right but not a patch on the fiesta for driving thrills, the ST is a proper hot hatch cloud9

This one is my eldest sons, its fast enough for him, for now, was thinking I may get one but that would mean three Fiesta in the household, I like them, but not that much biggrin

We were a bit concerned about him getting a nigh on 200 bhp car, but driving it, it feels so surefooted and though its fairly quick, it isn't too much, it could handle a lot more to be fair. My main concern is the theft/vandalism aspect, I may buy him a disklok.

Good choice mate.

I was looking at hot hatches in a similar price range over the last month. Ended up in a 15 plate 6k miles Cooper S for 17k. The ST does seem good value with it being the same price brand new.

Thank you.

I'll be going for the Mountune 215 kit too.
