mk2 Astra 1.3
I don't think it was even the L trim, it was a base model below the L. Originally didn't even have a clock or a passenger side mirror. A visit to a local scrappy soon saw both of these luxury items fitted.
Only 4 gears. Revvy, seemingly unburstable 1.3 engine. Would rev forever but as it had no rev counter I've no idea how many.
Sold it to a friend at 120K miles, he passed it on to another friend who crashed it and wrote it off just shy of 140K miles.

96 Toyota starlet I gave 2200 for and 3400 to insure. red lowered on black team dynamics wheels ,silly fart can welded on the back, no power steering, windy down windows, 6×9 speakers on the parcel shelf with the finest of euphoria albums blaring. bombing around the place like I was the st when in fact I was a tit.
Renault 5 with the dashboard gear stick and a 950cc engine! Attempting to do what I thought was a racing gear change I snapped the bolt off the selector and ended up with the complete gear stick rod inside the car! Managed to put it in third by hand and drove it home slipping the clutch. Those were the days bits fell off it for a pass time.
In 2003 at the grand old age of 21, a 1999 Rover 220SDi, with 105bhp of pure pig iron diesel engine. I promptly fitted a bigger turbo, higher-flow injectors and had it remapped to around 150bhp.
I proceeded to spend the next 3 years driving it like I'd stolen it and giving it absolute death everywhere, and the only things I ever replaced on it were standard service items.
I replaced it with an absolute moneypit of a Passat W8.

Worth mentioning how insurance has changed, too.
I still have a list somewhere of cars I was toying with the idea of buying when I was 20.
Back in the days when you had to call for insurance quotes, I rung up about these and a few others.
I was looking to spend around 12 to 14k.
E30 M3
E34 535 Sport
Porka 911 (non-turbo)
Lotus Esprit
The dearest for some reason was the E34 at around £1100 quid.
All the rest were under a grand.
Ended up with a new XR2i....and what a pile of crap that turned out to be

I passed my test in 1991, having already purchased my first car from a mate as it was cheap and had a certain something...
A 1983 Alfa Romeo Sprint Veloce (early plastic bumper type still with Sud front inboard brakes etc)
Someone had dropped a 1.5 lump in to replace the original 1.3 which gave it 95 BHP and some degree of poke for its day.
The car cost £350.
The insurance cost £953 (Exactly!) for TPF&T as no-one would cover it fully comp with a novice driver...
Perhaps the start of a bad habit as I've had 9 various Alfas over the years...though currently on a break after my last GT broke my spirit once too often

Yet to acquire mine, just a few things to fall into place. But an Audi A3 2.0t quattro sportback with the s line kit on it is what I'm buying. Surprisingly cheap on the insurance, my mates are paying £2k+ for their corsas whilst the Audi will set me back £1300 so it's a no brainer and I can keep her for a few years to come rather than outgrow the typical Corsa or Fiesta that most people have. Let the hate begin about a youngster having a fast car lol

Having just done the London to Brighton Mini Run in a friends new MINI, I really miss my classic! Loved it to bits.
I know I'll get another one in the future.
Exactly the same as my first car. Best way to learn about cars. Having just done the London to Brighton Mini Run in a friends new MINI, I really miss my classic! Loved it to bits.
I know I'll get another one in the future.
Including basical maintenance.
Don't crash the bloody matchbox for a start
