Totally agree on the Honda but...

They are *very* similar from that angle, to say otherwise is just being obtuse surely?

The gift that keeps on giving. thumbup
do one of these with the Lexus and an Aston
I think the only things that are *very* similar are the angle, the use of a roof, windows and wheels. hehe
I mean BMW should be ashamed of reproducing such an obvious copy of them.
I guess this means that a DB11 looks like the A5 too? which looks like the Lexus? Genius.
Happy to be obtuse

Lovely, but it would take a 'special' type of BMW fan to have one of these new over a DB11 I suspect...

Will make a lovely used buy though.
I suspect it will only cost about 60% of the DB11 even with a V12 once both are properly speeded .... or at least it will if sterling does not drop below euro parity
Are you suggesting these will only be bought be people who couldn't afford a DB11?
No, that was not the intention - more like they are not direct competitors due to significantly different pricing. Also, just because sb can afford a DB11, he/she still might not want to buy one for reasons other than price
S Class Coupe and to a lesser extent Panamera Coupe (only a question of Time imo ....) probably a more likely competitive set

Love it. Love the old one.

There's never been an ugly BMW, don't care what any of you think.
There have been some bland BMW's but not ugly.

Apart from the i3. That's just unforivable.
And the 2 series GT thing. Just buy a Focus FFS.
And the X1
and X4
and the 5 GT

and this now because it has wheel arches like an Audi hehe
And the 3 GT
and the X6
Oh, the 7-series
And the 1-series

Beautiful car, definitely a S-Class coupe beater. Will give Aston a run for their money, alongside bentley with their GT, if it is correctly priced.

The only way BMW can get back at a car with a massive front grille (S-class coupe), is for them to have an even bigger grille. Certainly , modern day design cues do now include massive front grilles, and I like it.

Overall, I think it looks good.

Really not following the whole BMWs are ugly vibe on this thread. If BMWs are ugly then surely most other mainstream cars are ugly (Mercs in particular).

You're a demanding audience, PHers!

I personally think it looks fking awful.
Front end is disgusting
Sides and rear have huge dents in them
Rear quarter windows are too small.

It's just a bit awful as a successor to the E31, it needs to be longer and sleeker, big rear quarter windows and smaller grills

Yet more fantastic surfacing from BMW. Bravo. Would certainly take it over any British GT.

Assume the engine ultimately used was too large to fit under the original pointy front end design hence the rather ugly bulge on the front of the bonnet which looks like an add on.

The bullst bingo is strong with this one...

"emotional surfacing"

Seriously? Where do these wkers come from, and who do they think they're kidding? The car itself just reminds me of an overweight lardarse in a fancy frock that's been smacked repeatedly in the face.

BMW appear to be finally uping their game...
From Bimmerpost

"BMW M8.
The BMW M8 is the icing on the cake of the sporty BMW 8 Series line-up.

Munich. Alongside the ongoing development of the standard 8 Series, the engineers at BMW M are also working flat out on the M model. A fully camouflaged, early prototype of the future BMW M8 will be unveiled in a driving presentation as part of the support programme for the Nürburgring 24-hour race. Classical M features like larger air intakes, modified brakes and a sports exhaust with four tailpipes hint at the significantly boosted power and dynamic potential of the car and whet the appetite for a driving experience of intense emotional richness.

“The conception and development of the standard BMW 8 Series and the M model run in parallel,” explains Frank van Meel, President BMW M Division. “The future BMW M8 will build on the genes of the 8 Series and augment its DNA with added track ability and generous extra portions of dynamic sharpness, precision and agility. It all flows into a driving experience that bears the familiar BMW M hallmarks and satisfies our customers’ most exacting requirements.”

Development is also underway of a race-spec car – the BMW M8 GTE – to spearhead the return of BMW Motorsport to Le Mans: “The BMW M8 GTE development programme for our Le Mans comeback is in full swing,” says BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. “Developing a new racing car is always exciting, and in the case of the BMW M8 GTE the anticipation is that much greater still. We can’t reveal any pictures yet, but I can promise you that the BMW M8 GTE will look spectacular. We are planning an initial roll-out for the first half of this year and are looking at giving the car its race debut in the Daytona 24 Hours in late January 2018.”

It's going to be out early for an M car

Looks aside, I wonder how big/ what this will weigh. I assume it will be a similar size (in order to compete) to a Conti GT and S coupe. That means it will be similar in length to a 7 series (?). So even too big to be described as a GT? And the M8 will inevitably disappoint as it will be too big, too heavy, and despite a 6-700bhp engine, offer a numb driving experience. BMW seem to have lost their way a bit in recent years, and I bet this will continue that trend; it's just not different nor special enough. If you want a big luxury coupe, the chances are you'll want a more prestigious badge. I think this will be a very rare sight on our roads.

It'll be similar in size to the rivals you mention....are you saying a Bentley CGT isn't a GT car? If so, I disagree.

Secondly, the M8 will have the USP of being a luxury GT with some sporty credentials, NOT an outright sports car. It will not be intended for that purpose. If it's going to be a rival to the S63 AMG and the Bentley CGT then it would be utterly ridiculous of BMW to make it some stripped out road racer. I'm sure it'll be very good at what it's actually intended to be.

BMW have lost their way in recent years? Well, they'd obviously lost it at the time of the last 8 series....because that was as big as a 7 series, as heavy (or heavier?) than a 7 series and even the most sporty 850CSi was also a big GT car, not a road-racer.

I've had an i8 for the last three days on loan from BMW. It's a brilliant car is all I can say. I've not looked at the big money numbers but I did around 500 miles on approximately £60 of unleaded with the car pretty much in Sport mode all the time. Fast, refined, fun, lots of positive comments, looks like the future, handles great and puts a smile on everyone's face every time the doors are opened.

My questioning of the GT status includes the S Coupe and Bentley. Having owned the latter I can comment with some experience, and having taken it around Europe a fair bit I would say it was good on the motorways, but too big on the mountain passes. Not just too big and heavy to be fun, it was too wide, and at times was positively not fun at all getting it around the bends with traffic coming the other way.

I overtook a Maserati Mistral today, and of course it is when you see a true GT from the late 60's you realise why these big modern barges may describe themselves in a certain way, but don't really deliver as I think a GT should. A GT surely needs to be able to cross continents at speed, and be driven in a spirited manner on back roads while having a decent bit of luggage space; an Aston V8/12 Vantage, or a Ferrari California maybe. But these big 'GTs' only work if driving at 150mph on an autobahn is the extent of your touring.

I'd agree with this... it's not going to be a direct competitor with the S63 or Bentley CGT and certainly not the same size as the 7 series... c'mon they're not going to Le Mans with a car that size. Its a different animal to the Merc & Bentley and will be lighter than both. I have a feeling the M8 is going to surprise a lot of people
