They must have put some oil up the tail pipe as oil in the header tank would not cause the car to smoke

What do you do in this situation? Ask the 2nd person to leave?
If I specified ONLY one person and they turned up with another person - then I would remind them that I specified ONLY one person and wave them good bye! On the other hand, if they said "can I bring brother/mechanic/wife ..along?" I would say NOPE. Well maybe wife would be okay.

Oil in the header tank would case them to go "oh look oil/gasket" after whatever else (pt1) they did, did it's work

rule of thumb

if more than 2 eastern europeans turn up just tell them f**k off.

have someone with you at all other times in the event of two turning up.

I'd go so far as to say "if 2 or more turn up" do exactly that...

Why would they still want to buy it if it wasn't a cheap fix,
Gasket and block are miraculously fine now.

wish someone with descent knowledge could explain
If oil in the coolant is making the car smoke then the oil has to be finding it's way into the cylinders and getting burnt. The head gasket is the number one culprit for that to happen, or alternately a crack in the engine itself.

I certainly wouldn't fancy sticking my finger into a coolant expansion bottle after a test drive so that also doesn't seem quite right.

The problem is that what you're saying doesn't really add up, which is possibly just a genuine misunderstanding. This is the sort of post we get fairly often here from new users especially in the school holidays so people are going to be cynical. It's nothing personal.

I'm with OP on this one,

When his back was turned they must have, stripped the rocker cover off, spark plugs, cam cover, camshaft etc etc to get to the combustion chamber, fill it up with oil, then refit the block and all parts.

Right,

rofl

Tl;dr OP is a obvious troll.

Such a bad copy/paste troll, we wish you hadn't bothered either.

At least the last guy bothered to change the old story somewhat.

A warning to all private sellers.
Yesterday we fell victim to a scam by 3 Eastern European thugs.
They came late in the day to look at our second hand car, we showed them around the car & then went for a test drive after around 5 minutes smoke was billowing out of the exhausts. We limped back and they said the head gasket was gone, one off them dipped his finger in the expansion tank and it was full of black oil.
I could not believe it as this is a good car.

The penny dropped when they insisted they would still buy it for half price (intimidating)
We googled thi and found that they distract you round the back of the car while the other one pours oil into the expansion tank.
They left empty handed but we now the have job of putting it right.

Be vigilant this is a horrible thing to suffer
