I don't think it needs seven gears though, it just needs a longer final drive ratio like the other 2.0TFSI equipped Superbs.
It can't have a longer final drive, that's the problem. The 220 etc have longer drives across the box, so by Skoda shortening the drives on the 280 to make it 'sporty', once in 6th it has no way to go

As per my post a few up, after test driving I can say that if any potential purchaser wants this car for long haul family duties, you will probably regret getting one.

Once Skoda put the 7th cog, however, it'll be a hard car to beat, especially as once that box is in it the engine will probably get some more power as well.

Increasing the final drive (differential) ratio moves all of the effective gear ratios up proportionally.

I suspect the gearbox is identical between the 280 and lesser models; they've just changed the diff (which of course is part of the gearbox assembly in a transaxle, but you know what I mean).

Over £40k for a Skoda estate, surely the best car they ever made was the Estelle Coupe. Dead classy!

Is it bad that I want this engine in a Kodiaq?

Not at all. I would be surprised if they went ahead with that though. However since you can get the 2.0 TFSI engine in the Kodiaq I am sure someone will be along to tune one before long

Ditto, it would be a great pairing, but it would take potential sales from the Alteca and Tiguan so I can't see them doing it.

Rumour has it that there will be an Ateca Cupra, with 300PS, not as practical as a Kodiaq but close.

The problem being (as a used buyer) no bugger will choose one over a diesel.

The Ateca's only 5 seats, isn't it?

No I am fairly sure the Ateca is being marketed heavily as a 7 seater

I think a few people will choose the petrol and that in a couple of years they will be the nice cheap ones. I'll be looking out for one as well probably.

Trust me, having considered an Ateca at length then opting for a Leon ST FR instead, there is no 7 seat option.

There is as yet unnamed, nose job Kodiaq SEAT due out. SEAT are running a suggest a name competition on Twitter - #seatseekingname

It's not too hard to spec a non performance VW Polo to £20k these days though. The Skoda is pretty good value when compared to the BMW/Mercedes/Audi equivalent.

£40,000 for a Skoda estate though... I'm sure it's hugely capable and I'm a big fan of the Superb - all generations of it, in fact. But £40k? Not a chance!

£40k gets you a year old 535d estate with only a few k on the clock. Over 2 years of warranty left. There's just no competition for me.

A mate of mine bought a nearly new BMW 520 auto estate for a big discount with just a few k on the clock last year , he's put nearly 30k miles on it since.

Just had it valued to swap it for another BMW from the same dealer , depreciation is nearly £300 per week !!!!!

Be careful what you wish for.

Problem being that VAG, IIRC, replaced certain parts of the 2.0 TSI engine with forged parts in the 280/290/300/310bhp models. If you tune the standard 2.0 lump then it seems that VAG expect certain parts may fail if you significantly increase power.

At least he's not one of these parvenues that can't afford to buy a car outright and have to lease one for £300 a month instead.
