The earlier one is the daddy. Even harder to find.
If you up the budget a bit.....Well, a lot, actually. Even now, I would love to build a replica one of these for the road. In fact, I would be happy with a replica of any of the Supertouring cars from this era.

ETA: There is some absolute car porn for sale on that website.

The more I read about these, the more they appeal to me. Although I think you need to grab one now, as the prices are already heading north towards the sort of crazy cost of stuff like Cavalier SRI 130s etc.

It only has 148bhp, but then it only weighs 1250kg.

It also has all the stuff you want, like ABS, a sunroof, electric windows/mirrors, air con etc but non of the flim-flam that comes with modern cars.

The P11s were slightly more at just over 1300kg with half a tank ( a GT86 is 1235kg like for like ) - but yeah, light for a 4/5 door saloon with all the kit on. I weighed mine and it came in at almost exactly the same weight as the Autocar test weight ( discrepancy probably down to fuel load or tyre make ).

Handling was sorted by Dirk Schoysmann who was heavily involved in the Skyline GTR of the time. The suspension settings were all softened off for UK roads after all the Nurburgring input.....except for the GT that was left as is.

The saloons were a bit less weight and rarer - they had a sort of oval-holed rear bulkhead that helped handling but meant it was a bit harder for through-loading big items

I had a saloon, and it was great, drove a dream. That engine is pretty decent, okay 150bhp isn't special but it sounds pretty good at full chat and it is strong, I got high 30's mpg on a run and the handling was so much fun I learnt a lot. Sadly mine had been very poorly treated so was starting to have issues and I stupidly traded it in for a Clio 172. Not that the Clio was bad, but it didn't save me any money and I never quite gelled with it in the same way.

With some breathing mods, a 4-2-1 manifold, and a remap I've heard you can see a whole 160-165bhp which would be a little funner but probably not worth it smile

The contemporary Sunny GTi is also an interesting curio. Again, hard to find.

Nice. I'd have to have the V6 if I was actually buying though. That one definitely needs a good polish.

Call me a chav, but I love this. Made £1850 last time which seems fair given the pricing of most old Fords.

A lot of the recent stuff falls into the category "great to see, zero ownership desire", which is why we end up with MGs, E-types and 911s out populating everything else. Ho hum.

And it's self-propagating, because those types have a good non-OEM support base which makes them attractive as usable classics, which encourages more people into the ecosystem and more vendors see that and respond with more parts...

Boxster prices are on the up and this one looks like great value at the lower end of the market.

I like that Porsche but we'd probably get bricks and dead herring gulls thrown at us in Hartlepool.

What's different about having a Porsche then?
