Like most '70s and '80s cars they've disintegrated to nothing unfortunately.

Even when they were main dealer bread and butter we had loads of problems with crap build quality and flaky electrics

They weren't really anything special to drive though - they were a simply styling exercise
Edited slightly as the same is true for the majority of older cars !

There is that... hehe

But even by the Best of Leyland gold standard some aspects like interior trim and electrics were pretty fragile and boy could some of them rot. We had half a dozen immaculate R16s in the yard that sales had taken in px with the rear torsion bars about to erupt through the boot floor as just one example.

Engines and gearboxes on the other hand lasted for ever. One customers R18 used as a 24/7 airport taxi racked up 250k miles which is pretty impressive even now.

Mum (briefly) had a Renault 16, I remember Dad saying that he must've grabbed the only solid bit of chassis when they bought it

This looks fantastically crisp. How hard would it be to chuck in the drivetrain from a 172 or similar?
But what a lovely crisp piece of design it is, though. the 25, of this era was especially nice in my opinion.

I had a four door in this colour but mine was a 1.9 non turbo Diesel RT. Although the idea of a diesel sans forced induction sounds horrific today, In reality, the 63bhp offered up moved it along quite acceptably. It was totally reliable, too, which was a surprise.

Talking of Renaults, I once owned this:

I can't remember that last time I saw one.
The early 1990s were a high water mark for Renault. Agree those early first generation Clios look crisp and neat compared to todays blobby superminis.

The Clio was the 1991 European Car of the Year, and was a regular top 10 seller in the UK in the early years of its life. The "Nicole and Papa" TV adverts were memorable and successful.

Subsequent generations may have been objectively "better", but the Clio became blander and more bulbous with each generation.

Over budget and a lot of money IMO for a MK4 escort at a bag over thread budget.

But it's been well used and the history is great.

Such a shame that the owner looked after such a crap car so well - he could have preserved an XR3i or something and it would be worth a hell of a lot more

Advert text says it was a lady owner.

We’ve already got plenty of XR and RS Fords preserved. It’s good to see the vanilla models being properly looked after too.

Strange comment to make (particuarly in this thread!), the standard models are fast becoming the ones lost to time, the cooking models from pretty much any brand will survive in much bigger numbers.

Also, she's just had it serviced at a main dealer every year and kept the paperwork, hardly exceptional!

That xr4x4 will need some metal to make it roadworthy and that escort, it looks tidy but is crying out for a black top with bike carbs.

Funny you should say that as when I go to classic car shows it’s the vanilla cars which I find people are interested in the most... they’re the ones their Mam/Dad/neighbour/teacher used to own and ones which are more likely to invoke a memory rather than a suped up old RS

It’s lucky to even have a passenger door mirror.

It’s expensive, but should hold if you look after it with that provenance.

Four speed gearbox and bare steel wheels with no wheel trims. For the kind of miserable cheapskate who looked at the 1.3 L and thought "nah, that's too opulent and luxurious for me".

It's easy to forget how acutely price-driven the market used to be. Money was hard to come by. As a lad I remember the awe I held the three letters on the bootlid of my pals dad's car compared to our base snotter.

I once recommended a Ford Escort Mk 3 1100L to a first time driver because it was a Ford, probably reliable and a best seller.

Then I drove it. God, it was bad, heavy steering, wooden brakes, dangerously slow. So sure, it may remind you of a past era and inspire rose tints but did anyone drive these cynical lumps of steel, iron and plastic?

Looks lovely on steelies to my eyes, currently looking at new Dacia Dusters and was pleased to note that due to a (presumably cost saving) quirk in the line-up, you can get the 'Essential' model with steelies as long as you spec the (no-cost) extra of having an additional LPG tank.

Iirc the basic car was a 1.4 (CVH?) by then, so the 1.3 Popular really was the cheapest version, using the old engine. Amazingly well preserved, so good to see one like that. Would look good in the Haynes museum.

Agreed. I passed my test in 1994 and my early driving experiences were in late '80s Fiestas and Metros. I can remember rear wash/wipe, front seat headrests, and passenger door mirrors being "luxuries" that weren't offered on the basic Popular or City models.

According to Wikipedia you could still get a 1.1 in your Escort in 1989 smile
