Good plate for an internet warrior!

I have always been a fan of the Monaco cars, particularly the early 25s but they never ever come up for sale. A 5 Monaco did, I offered to buy it for my niece as a first car on the proviso she looked after it and I got it when she bought something else. Sadly she bought a Ford Ka (and not even the original well designed one) and I had nowhere to put it. So that did not happen.

As if by magic

That is lovely but the auto gearbox just doesn't appeal.

Insurance is your problem in driving a car back from the continent.
It's possible to find an insurer, but if your primary residence is in the UK it's illegal to drive a foreign registered vehicle in the UK. That means a trailer/transporter from the port of entry.

It’s perfect for the car. This is as wafty as hatchbacks come.

I agree. I'm currently driving a Daihatsu Move with a column auto selector, a flat floor and a front bench seat that's like a sofa. It's surprisingly barge like.

They were white goods at the time, yes they did a job but there was no joy in them

rofl Loving the process of actually getting the garage door open

- so wouldn't you just stick a roof rack on it, yellow spot lights and sticker bomb the front wing?

There’s still joy in a basic 80s small hatchback, if that’s your kind of thing. Even with the 1.0L engine and four speed gearbox, it’ll be a completely different driving proposition to anything available today.

Still, the price seems very strong for a “barn find” basic Polo that’s going to need a fair bit of reconditioning.

What’s the going rate for a decent one (that hasn’t been slammed and sticker-bombed)?

Regardless of how they were viewed against their rivals at the time, IME little 30-ish year old hatchbacks are like go-karts when compared to modern cars. Loads of feel through the steering and the engine is practically in the cabin with you. All the anaesthesia of modern motoring gone.

There are plenty of better cars a Suzuki Swift Sport is available from £1500 with modern(ish) safety yet old school fun, far faster and safer than this dross

Has anyone come across any nice LS400s lately the MK1 or 2, wanting one to cross off the list for a while now

The Cavalier was a decent car in its day, but I'm not sure I'd want to spend £2500 on a 1.8 that's far from perfect.

Honda Accord Aerodeck on eBay. Rough condition (needs front end respray) but these cars are rare now so can’t be too choosy!

Not crap at all. I have driven a few of these over the years, the last one being a rather bargelicious V6 CDX, but I've never actually owned one. I wouldn't mind an SRi130.

There was an early Celsior advert on the 1-5 thread? I found one with velour a little while ago that was reasonable money and great condition.
I think if I were to go for another I'd try and find a velour seated Celsior import.

Great cars thumbup

This is my old one (it's a very very dark green):

I'd like to point out it doesn't have 3D plates, imgur has done something funny with the HDR photo.

I had loads of these as sheds. They were pretty reasonable in their day, much better car than the stty Sierra for example, but I wonder if now they'd fall into that gap between old and charming and new and decent, that gap being "a bit crap".

Driving and owning pleasure probably didn't make it into the top 5 design priorities for an 80s/90s repmobile, but they're certainly robust and very very easy to work on so a better "modern classic" than most of their peers. I'd certainly be delighted to see a clean one out and about.

The Vectra B, the first one badged as a Vauxhall Vectra in the UK, must be one of UK motoring histories biggest falls from grace; the Vectra A like this one stole heaps of sales from Ford, carried on the big success of the Mk3 Cavalier/Ascona C, was popular with private and fleet buyers, was a good 2nd hand buy right up until the end of the century, and were still a reasonably common sight on the roads a decade after they went out of production. The Vectra B was st to drive, st to own, and mercifully all seemed to die quite young. Vauxhall have come close to recovering their position in the mid market in the decades since. I wonder if it was the same story on the continent?
