appy memories of my V6 "Cesaro"
There's a Cesaro laid up near me, along with an early Mondeo V6 and Vectra 'B' SRi. I have a photo somewhere...

I've never seen the Cavalier Mk3 and the Vectra B compared with visually, despite one basically looking like the facelift of the other; was it sort of an 'in' joke? Perhaps at the time it was just a given that they'd look alike.

I do wonder about some of the cars / prices in this thread

I'm using this on the school run for the next week or so, one of my dad's stock that I'm testing as my sister is going to use it it when she visits over Christmas

98 2.0 petrol Auto Merc with 100k on it, probably a £1950 car

Nice not mint but great for wafting about in

Been a while since I've seen one of those without the additional "racing stripe"* along the sills and arches.
All ways thought these looked great and arguably better than the contemporary 3 series. Rare to see one in this condition though

  • Some call it rust but I prefer to see it as character

Bit crap but I like this thread and wanted to get involved. By gentle lol.
Not crap at all. I have driven a few of these over the years, the last one being a rather bargelicious V6 CDX, but I've never actually owned one. I wouldn't mind an SRi130.
I had loads of these as sheds. They were pretty reasonable in their day, much better car than the stty Sierra for example, but I wonder if now they'd fall into that gap between old and charming and new and decent, that gap being "a bit crap".

Driving and owning pleasure probably didn't make it into the top 5 design priorities for an 80s/90s repmobile, but they're certainly robust and very very easy to work on so a better "modern classic" than most of their peers. I'd certainly be delighted to see a clean one out and about.

The Vectra B, the first one badged as a Vauxhall Vectra in the UK, must be one of UK motoring histories biggest falls from grace; the Vectra A like this one stole heaps of sales from Ford, carried on the big success of the Mk3 Cavalier/Ascona C, was popular with private and fleet buyers, was a good 2nd hand buy right up until the end of the century, and were still a reasonably common sight on the roads a decade after they went out of production. The Vectra B was st to drive, st to own, and mercifully all seemed to die quite young. Vauxhall have come close to recovering their position in the mid market in the decades since. I wonder if it was the same story on the continent?

I completely disagree with the above, based on my long term ownership experience back in the 90’s doing 25,000 miles per year.

I had a 1994 MK3 Cavalier 2.0i GLS. It was just about okay, although it was unrefined and didn’t feel a great deal different to a MK2 that I’d owned years before.

Enter the 1996 Vectra 2.0i CDX. What a revelation as regards refinement and a comfortable driving experience. The engine was smooth and the performance good. Suddenly regular 250 mile journeys from the south to the north were a pleasure. I regularly drove in work many 2.0 Ghia Mondeo’s. Whilst the handling on the Ford may have been sharper, the engine and refinement of the Vectra trumped it in my opinion.

I went back to BMW and replaced it with an E36 325i Coupe. I did miss the quietness and motorway cruising ability of the Vectra.

At Shed money that would be hard to beat I reckon. 2 grand from a trader, with short warranty and long MOT, would be a safe buy too. Classy runabout.

Out of interest, what do you mean by that?

Something along the lines of "My dad is in the trade and most of the £3k future classics offered up on this thread look like £500 "P/X to clear" horrors to me"?

More along the lines of if this Merc is only worth £1950 who the hell is paying £5K for a Cavalier / Astra etc

I understand the demand for the halo models (RS, Cosworth etc) but the average stuff I just don't understand the demand / prices

I think it's a function of rarity more than quality.

If you've only one smart Cavalier, then you only need two nutters clamouring for it and you'll get a decent price. And there are a lot more than two nutters.

Whereas the survival rate of a nice car like that C-Class is much higher, because there's always been a reason to look after it, even if you're not a nutter.

Been a while since I was in one, I was also running them as sheds so durability and serviceability trumps all other considerations; for example you could change a clutch in a Mk3 Cavalier in no time at all on the side of the road, and it was the usual FWD ordeal on the Vectra. Those Ecotec engines were also a lot more trouble than the old OHC ones in the Cavalier, for all they were much more modern to use. Given what you've said I can well believe they were much nicer if they were new cars and maintenance/durability weren't really a concern.

As soon as I had more than moths in my wallet I stopped buying Vauxhalls of course hehe

Be interesting to try them back to back today though, mainstream cars took huge leaps between 1989 and 1999 in almost every area.

That is a fine looking car, especially given it's hamstrung by goofy FWD proportions. The pointlessly overlapping Brera and GT were real disappointments after that frown

Speaking of which I just had a look on BCA at what the GT and spider go for. 3 owner GT 1.9 JTDM Cloverleaf with 80k miles is £1725 CAP, a Brera JTS S Coupe on 107k is £2,525 and a 46k Spider 2.2 JTS is £4k.

Are they as mediocre as I remember?! I like an interesting shed.

I don’t mind 4-pot but whilst doing research on youtube these GTV do rust badly (suspension components etc) frown
