Saw 1998 corolla and immediately thought of this:

Unfortunately it wasn't quite as sporty but does look remarkably clean, I suspect it is one of those cars that will live forever.

Sometimes, back when a certain car was a fairly common sight on the roads of this fair isle, you would'nt have given them a second glance.

Now, when you see one of those cars today, you suddenly realise just what a handsome machine they were.

Well it's cheaper here https://www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk/mazda/626/339...

Mazda made a GT, not a GTI and I'm fairly sure that is a stick on Halfords badge.

They did a normal 2.0 GLX (107hp), a more powerful GT (with a "raunchy" 144hp) plus a 4WS version.

I like the look of that , simple but smart.
The GTI badge does certainly look slightly different to the others.

The Allegro VDP had always been an absolutely horrible almost comedy type of car (and I’m not into BL bashing)… but I haven’t seen one for a while and suddenly this unusual metallic blue one in a decent ad with nice photos actually looks pretty good. No idea of values for these but doesn’t seem like a bend over job compared to many classics.

Yeah, I like it thumbup

Looks ideal for carrying my mountain bike to the trails, or even to have some fun on some of them green lanes.

Love these in long and short wheelbase forms. I'd love to find a decent one as a dog hauler, fold the back seats down and away

Never really liked Allegros though I recall the 1750HL put in good performance figures.

That said, as a young man with a rusty Austin A40 which had real character and decent ability +better than a Stranglia), there was something very alluring about a "mini-Roller" with nice seats, wood veneer picnic tables and no rust.

The 1500 E-series was probably OK but an A-Plus engined version would not have gone amiss.

Out of bored curiosity - what is the most powerful lump you could easily drop into this Allegro?

Emphasis on easy - unbolt old engine and bolt in new.

The1750cc HL/Sport had 90hp using twin carbs.

The engine was developed I to the R and S series using a VW gearbox, in the Maestro which is presumably bigger under the bonnet.

It's an E-Series so a 1750 should go straight in and push BHP from 69 to 81 (!) at least and more if you can find a twin-carb version.

This old thread https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... suggests a Montego Turbo engine would be an interesting start point - uses the same mounts.

Is it the same car that Johnny Smith is using for his build? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmUYcgLdho4

I've been following this thread for the last 258 pages, and I'm afraid this might be the worst entry to-date!

I quite like this - proper old bus.
Think I like the cibie lights, the wheels (when clean) it's still being used, I think the colour actually suits it -

Thats not expensive theae days if its solid. GLT interior and wheels, don't think it IS a GLT though it it?
Hard to mimic the GLT look as I believe all the blacked out bits around the window frames and lower parts of the bodywork is GLT specific. It would've been a lot of effort to make it a GLT if it wasn't one already.

Yup, GLT for sure on reflection.

I daresay the Alfa owner knows the next MOT might be a struggle given last years corrosion advisories but nevertheless it’s a lovely car for the money.
