Sick of VAG churning out tiny increases in power to slightly out do the last car. Anyone for a Skoda Octavia 220...i mean 230. Oh now they just released a 240!!!.
Seat Leon 280,290.....300!!!!!
Golf 220. Yawn...230?? Yep
Mark my words the Polo GTI 210 WILL be coming to a showroom near you.... after you just bought the 200. And with that engine they will just go on and on an on.
So, what you're saying is, you're sick of VW sticking to a very efficient and reliable engine for many of their VAG range? You're also annoyed at them for giving it slight power tweaks that make it faster but also more frugal?Seat Leon 280,290.....300!!!!!

Manufacturers these days eh?
At what point did i say i was annoyed? It is just laughable that they massage another paltry 10bhp per hotter model out of an engine that is known to put out over 300bhp in factory spec and people buy them because it it gives them that pissing contest win knowing fair well another one will be along in 6 months with.... another 10 whole horsepower!!!
As for that Polo it is hardly a game changer. It has the same power as a 200 ps 2004 Golf GTI and looks to be just as large. At least it will get 10ish more in 6 months and called the Performance Pack!!! Oh VW how we love you.

VW need 2 litres to put out 200hp reliably?
embarrassing if you ask me, but good news for prospective tune-happy owners
I read an article a while ago that said after the emissions debacles, some 'performance' engines will be increasing in capacity as it's easier to genuinely meet emissions regs with larger ones.embarrassing if you ask me, but good news for prospective tune-happy owners
The Mini Cooper S went up to 2 litres as well, possibly for that reason.
Either way, a simpler, less stressed engine is always better than a highly strung one. Ford's 1 litre engine has had turbos popping left right and centre. There's just no point if yon don't need to.
Could the move from 1.8 to 2.0 maybe have been dictated by the DSG gearbox?
i'm sure I've read the 1.4 and the 1.8 both have the same peak torque output cos that's the most that DSG box can handle. Lets just say for argument its 180lb ft.
Whereas the 2.0 uses the 'better' DSG box that can deal with 300lb ft+

Completely untrue. The engine has a lower specific power output per litre than the higher output TSI engines, even with the 140ps output. The 1.0 Ecoboost doesn't run at especially high boost pressure, uses quality Borg Warner turbos and has no oil starvation problems. I'm not aware of any turbos popping anywhere. In fact the standard (125ps +) turbo is happy at 22psi, at a specific engine output of 180ps.I'd day its by far the most reliable of the modern small capacity turbo engines.

I guess this engine will also go into the new Seat Ibiza for the Cupra?
The best you can order at the moment is an FR with 95bhp
95 !? :O The best you can order at the moment is an FR with 95bhp
I'am sure the last FR was in 150bhp and 120bhp guises. 95 shouldn't be anywhere near the FR badging lol.
Edit: Just looked, the Preface had 1.4 with 148bhp and a 1.2 with 105bhp, the new Facelift with the 1.0 has 110bhp.

Lots of talk about remaps and tuning but given that VW could void the warranty on mapped cars (like in the thread below or just google vw td1 code) would you really take the chance?

Unless of course things have changed in which case I stand corrected.

I can tell you're not a VAG man and that's fine. Not everyone gets it. VW simply wants to improve this well-renowned and robust 2.0 turbo petrol unit as apposed to making a new, complicated one with hideous issues. They have clearly learnt from their twin-charged mistake.
I never said it was a game changer. It's just a further improvement from the previous model. In typical VW fashion, despite it being an all new model, the revisions aren't exactly breathtaking, i'll agree. I just like it's ability to be a good all-rounder, just like the Golf GTI.
It will be a fair bit lighter than the MK5, as it's on the new MQ chassis. The MK5 chassis looks ancient in comparison. Yes, there is a chance they may bring out a performance pack version or have a sport pack option. I'm really struggling to see what's actually bothering you here?

Conversely I would much rather have a 2.0 engine with 200bhp than a 1.4 with 200bhp. Just feel nicer to drive and more flexible. I think I am in the minority though as I don't expect good performance (and 200bhp is plenty) and to also get 55mpg and would always sacrifice MPG for a subjectively "nicer" engine. embarrassing if you ask me, but good news for prospective tune-happy owners
Well, i still think it's bland. Albeit i've only seen a few pics so far.
I'm not confusing bland with subtle..i mean...a Golf R is subtle...but still looks...good (IMO)...this...with it's rounded off edges...i dont know.
I prefer the look of the new Ibiza at the moment.
A 1.5 150PS engine is heading into that (FR guise?) So i suspect it will make it to the Polo in 'GT' spec.
