What fall in sales. As said earlier your figures must be wrong else how where so many new Defenders registered in the U.K.
Fall in sales? Every country that left the Empire was suddenly able to buy alternate products and did so. Every utility firm that was privatised was suddenly able to buy alternate products and did so. Even the final bastion of Govt backed purchases, the MOD stopped buying around a decade ago. Each change brought a demise in volumes.

The farmers et al that you fondly insist are a huge commercial market weren't buying new in any size. By the end the largest market was city chaps and families wanting an iconic toy and lifestyle businesses wanting to project a certain image.

I believe that in the last few years they were down to under 15000 units a year globally. The European mainland collapsed as any kind of viable market over a decade ago so I don't believe for one minute the excuse that production ended due to EU regs. It was ended because sales were in clear, steady decline and the space at the factory was going to be far more profitable being used to produce high margin cars that people were scrabbling over their bank managers to rent.

I'm not saying this isn't correct, but where are you getting your figures from? The ones DonkeyApple posted earlier simply cannot be correct, because they are only claiming 971 where built in 2012....

While the DVLA says there were 5216 newly registered in 2012.....

The only people really bemoaning the passing of the Defender are the fans who mostly bought used anyway. I'm sure there are a few farmers with particularly small gates, but they have other, better options these days.

I suspect the new Defender will be a pastiche, and available in FWD. Personally I hope it's a FC/van with removable plastic roof panels and swivel front seats. eek

I have to say that growing up with LandRover and travelling all over the UK taking part in off road challenges etc, I can honestly say that not once did I see a LandRover stuck, anywhere. I did however see a lot of other marques stuck all the time. (No doubt somebody will post up a photo of a stuck LandRover) Whether this was down to the vehicle or the fact that most people simply do not no how to drive off road, who knows. LandRover & Jeep have been around the longest, so they must be doing something right.

You can still buy a 70 series landcruiser in 5 door, 3 door, 2 door pick up and 4 door pick up here in the UAE.
Can get them in Australia too i think so rhd.
Guess there just isnt the market for them elsewhere but would think they are as close to the concept as a defender as you could get (albeit with more reliabilty i imagine).

But it's not though is it. I think the op explained it quite well.

To put it in perspective. A Defender 90 is about 152" long, which is about the same as a MINI hatchback. Other SWB utility vehicles like a FourTrak or SWB Shoguns are of similar size.

If you were in the market for a small car like a MINI, but found out the only options where vehicles the size of an Audi A8, you wouldn't exactly conclude an A8 is the ideal solution.

Lots of farmers around here are driving these (although usually the slightly older version) They aren't particularly small or cheap though, and whoever is responsible for the design should be strung up.

Hold on, though. He also said he wanted seating for 4/5. You ever looked in the back of a SWB Landy?

4 in the back, 3 in the front, a load of tools on the floor in the back and a fuel bowser behind.

I made some enquiries with Torque GT about importing a petrol 70 series 5 door from Japan. They said there would be no problem getting it on the road here. I bought a 110 Defender in the end but I would still love a Land Cruiser.

Yes, frequently. Check my profile smile

When I was 17 I had a D90 as my first car. Think we managed 11 people in it one time. And that was with a cubby box and not a middle seat.

But 6 people is realistic and easy in a 90. And something like a FourTrak will happily seat 4/5 people.

Yep the swb landcruiser seems to be the new 90 replacement for anyone not wanting a pickup. However they're relatively big and bloody expensive but should maintain their value and not depreciate by much.

Swb shogun is also an option but nearly everyone I see for sale is an auto, which will put alot of farmers off.

Two in the front of any recent Defender. Even on ones with three, the third has to be an amputee anorexic. And the rear seats are side-facing, with all the comfort of a spike.

The Landcruiser 76 is still available in right hand drive markets, e.g. Aus and SA
