Sorry if this is in the wrong section...

Pulled up outside my mrs parents house tonight and a small child ran from two adults and two other kids down the road and drew a X in chalk outside the house, then ran off.

We didn't think much of it but on closer inspection there are chalk arrows along the road, like directions towards the X outside the house.

Mrs dad has a brand new S3 on the drive. I'm a bit worried it could be some sort of targeted robbery situation but neither her dad or mum seem concerned.

Anyone heard of this before?

Wash all the chalk marks away before anything occurs.

Similar stuff to this has been mentioned in the urban myths thread.

Comrade Corbyn and his henchmen are busy marking up houses ready for occupation when the great revolution starts.

Yours is to be given to the unwashed to trash.

Sounds fair to me.

If you're lucky you may be able to keep your toothbrush.

No I'm not joking.

Ask yourself one simple question. Why?

Of course 'x' doesn't mark the spot for potential thieves. Even if they were casing the joint, they're hardly likely to mark it with a big X are they? biggrin

Surely if the S3 is parked outside they don't need an X on the pavement? If it's not why break in to steal it?

Nothing to worry about... Now, had the child drawn two chalk dogs, tied to a fence...

I saw two men walking slowly along the street, pausing every so often and looking around before making a X on the pavement and walking on. When they returned I saw the logo on their jackets, Severn Trent Water, and there was me about to call the police too...

Ah yes, I'm told this is an old gypsy trick dating back to the early 18th century.

I remember being shown a short informational film about it at school in the '70s.

A bit like the one about kids playing on the farm and dying one by one it's stuck with me years later.

I think it was Rolf Harris who did the voice over (is that right?) and I still recall the advice at the end..."Think: two dags tied to a fence equals potential sexual offence, Run!"
