Bloke at work has got a VW Amarok, hes got a 9-5 office job?

the rear bed of the Amarok is spotless, can tell its never been used for anything.
So basically it's like buying a 5 seater car, say a saloon or a hatchback and never having people in the back seats?

Or maybe a track focused road car and never going on a track day?

Pickups are cool.

This one has been widened by about 2 feet by a mental Swede.

the only pickup i would entertain is the ford raptor. i was lucky enough to drive one as the team service vehicle for the abu dhabi desert challenge earlier this year and i absolutely fell in love with it.

towed a twin axle trailer loaded with my mate's mrs' car down to the bivi at a steady 140kph as though there was no load at all. the next day we were cruising at 140kph through the desert and towed the race car [sadly broken] for 70km through the dunes at 80-100kph. an absolute beast of a car which makes my lr3 v8 look quite pathetic.

most other pickups [i'd have a Baja'd Silverado and do wonder if you can lift a dodge ram srt10] belong to the trade and tarmac brigade. 2.0l diesel? behave!

Yep, my farming neighbour has just dropped LR Discovery for a Ranger.
Very similar to a farmer neighbour of mine but he went for a 2 year old Isuzu D-Max. Looks very smart at the moment, but I'll report back in 5 years timelaugh

I think pick ups are great, really useful for towing track cars wink

I accepted a job a few years ago and was looking forward to getting a L200 crew cab, as I was always struggling to move my broken cars about.

Was a bit disappointed when I was given a Focus Ghia..... rolleyes

This. If you run a limited company you get the company to pay for the purchase (so tax deductable) , you can reclaim the vat and have the company pay for all maintenance. They're classed as commercial vehicles so benefit in kind is fixed as opposed to variable depending on the price and emissions, at 3150. On that 3150 you have to pay tax at the rate of your earnings ie. I pay myself up to the 20% tax rate limit which means I could run about in a pickup at the cost of 630 pound a year of personal tax while my company pays the cost of the vehicle.
Is that all pickups? So I could run an El Camino for £630 a year?

Used to have an L200 Animal, it was perfect for 4 adults up front sat in leather with music on travelling in relative comfort while 2 great danes and a sharpei travelled in the back under a trucktop hard cover with the side windows slid back. Used to comfortably tow track cars behind it aswel.

No other vehicle type could have offered that sort of car up front/van out back combo, we looked at Volvo XC90s but the space for the dogs wasn't anywhere as big and their smell and slobber would have ruined the cabin. After those dogs passed away i didn't need the truck anymore so settled for an estate after we bought a terrier but I've always had a soft spot for crew cab trucks, just hard to justify to Mrs. Murphy. Would love a Ram/Silverado/F250!
Ignoring the "scene" thing, I think the VW Transporter and that sized van with 2 rows of seats and decent car like spec would be a much better outdoorsy person car. Quite a bit more efficient in terms of usable space, would ride better and not carting a load of unused mechanicals about.

Surely that will depend on where you are going to do your outdoorsy stuff.

True, but there aren't many places in the UK that you can't get to in a van, or car for that matter.

At least if somebody "wrongs" you on the road, you can get out and throw that at them.

Needs to have a maximum payload exceeding 1000kg I believe, no idea how it would work on an import

You also want a tare weight under about 2000kg or you get hit with lower national speed limits due the archaic van laws.

Cost is the biggest factor for this, a nice spec caravelle is more on par with a disco price wise, not a ranger/l200/nav

Having just spent 4 days green laning in Wales, I'd probably beg to differ... wink An AWD Van on AT's might be ok, just lack of ground clearance and lots of vulnerable bodywork.

Having just gone through the process with Ford you can spec a double cab transit, up to the same level as a ranger, if not higher, for substantially less. Same payload, engine, leather, all the latest electrical options. But it doesn't look like a pick-up and drives like a van.

We have a 2015 LWB Transit pickup and a 2004 Ranger and the Transit is in a different league. Not sure what the new Rangers are like, but the Transit's really nice. They perhaps could offer the 3.6 and 6 sp auto in the Transit, or, the V6 Ecoboost like they do in the USA. It certainly isn't a car, but still very nice to drive and a brilliant utility truck.

They do offer an auto with the 2017 transit, but at a cost. I'd like the 3.2 from the ranger as an option on the transit but they've just down sized for EU6 so can't see it happening.

The current Ranger is nicer than the Transit. The 2004 Ranger is less nice than the current Transit.
