I sort of see both sides.

When shopping for cars I always check the mot history. repeated advisories put me off. If I see an advisory for headlamp aim I wonder if it has had a small bump.

Why do people worry about these things? If I put my car in for an mot and I come away with a pass I don't give a st what they had to do before issuing the pass. I've got much more to worry about than my cars's mot history. smile
Agreed, but there do seem to be a lot of odd people with some kind of obsessive disorder. It makes no sodding difference if the car fails on a minor point which is immediately rectified, it doesn't suddenly halve the value of the car.
I think they are same people who think that a car will self destruct at 60k miles.
Great people to buy from though " 'windscreen wiper worn' failure here, must knock at least 10% off the value..."

Anybody that knows cars will tell you that a mot pass is not an indication that the car is in good condition .
To quote a tester mate of mine
" the facking suspension can be close to falling off and its a pass but a facking sticker in the wrong place on a windsreen and it's a fail !"

Can you give an example wher ethe suspension would be close to falling off and it wouldn't fail an MOT? What part is broken, that they're not testing?
It's obviously hyperbole from the tester, but the point is that components like suspension can be very worn before it'll actually fail an MOT.

Hidden from view, a bolt could be 99% sheared, pass the test and then collapse next week.

The guy I use for MOTs will adjust the beam there and then during the test because it's a bugbear of his. Rather that than fail it and have to retest.
This is how it always used to be.

I've never seen a bolt that's sheared 99%

This all sounds like nonsense tbh.
Well if you haven't seen it then I guess it couldn't possibly exist could it....

Hilarious thread!

I feel sorry for MOT testers, you are damned if you do, damned if you don't!

Some people don't want any advisories, fair enough.

Others are suspicious of cars with no advisories.

Serious question to the people who have commented in the thread who either despair at advisories, or are suspicious of no advisories.

Do you ever manage to buy used cars?
