Come on, the 106 was and still is st. There's no way they have the same cult appeal as the original 205.
A case of " rose tinted glasses" me thinks.
106gti was a fantastic little thing - as was the 205 from 13 years before.....
Based on experience - not having read someone else's opinion and regurgitated it
Perhaps these were both cars I travelled in regularly (in non GTI guise) when my friends learned to drive. Whilst the 205 was a naughty rascal the 106 felt less playful but maybe that was down to the respective drivers. In either case the reality of driving either for any length of time would rapidly become wearing. I'm at the stage where I need a few more refinements and horses to play with! No need to revisit my youth in the same cars, I'd aim higher and get something a bit more exotic if I was after 90s nostalgia.

I was lucky enough to have one from new when I was 21. I stuffed it backwards into a ditch 9 months into ownership. Luckily it was repaired and I had 3 more years of happy motoring. It remains today as my only brand new car. Great fun.

Not many cars look good on steelies but that does

Yes, if you mean the very late 90s one

Am I right in saying that the 106's and Saxo's took the TU engine block from the non GTi 205's and gave them fuel injection and a larger displacement? Those were good engines. The TU certainly felt lighter (and better generally) than the XU block, which made the handling better IMO. I imagine with more power in the 106 version it would be an excellent drive. I've never driven a 106 frown.

The first production car gearbox to use ABS plastic internals if I recall correctly.

Chassis tuned by CASE.

Looks just like the one I had, mine was R reg though.

Great fun, just like a go-kart in the bends, pretty quick for its time too.

Engine went bang and bent a lot of pricey bits. Cost a small fortune to fix, then it never ran properly again.

I hadn't realised that 306 GTI prices had skyrocketed?

So a quick check found this:

confused

I know, I think people are seeing the 10k ones ( rather like the 60k S1 RS Turbo ) and assuming they're all that price - I saw a few at under 2.5k with MOT in the last couple of weeks

Similarly, on the E46 CSL thread, a poster said he wished he could find just a 'driveable' Mk2 16v Golf for 3k so he could buy one. 5 minutes and I'd found 2 with 12 months MOT ( although I'm sure people could find fault with them )

Fair point, that one does look good for 140K. But I was thinking more of cars like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEUGEOT-306-GTi6-RESTORE...

Now above £3K, and I've seen cars for sale at more than five. Unprecedented for 306s really. I think that black one would have been less a while ago too. Get one of those as well while you still can!

Fun to drive but I really didn't get on with mine as it was so unreliable with electrical problems starting at 18 months old and only 15,000 miles on the clock. I'd previously had 4 years of hassle free motoring in a 1 owner 1.9 205 gti so perhaps I was spoilt.
Sold the 106 in 1999 (complete with the same electrical issues) to the Peugeot Service manager at the local dealer......I then bought myself a Caterham 7 .....those were the days....

Hey, Pistonheads: to supplement Shed of the Week (which seeks out sub-£1000 cars), could we instigate a slightly upmarket version aiming to find, say, the ultimate sub-£3000 car for those with a tad more to spend? A posher SOTW: "Summerhouse of the Week", if you will.

This looks good, and if it's anything like the S1 Rallye I used to have your feet will fit fine (I wear a size 11 and had no problems heel-and-toeing).
This is a brilliant idea PH, please do this.

Do ensure your feet fit, they aren't joking when they say this pedal box is tight! biggrin

Fond memories of the 106 GTi. Mate had one at 17, was the first car I was ever pulled over in. "Does he always drive like that?" "No officer....."

Had two new ones. Please check out my car bio. Had so much stuff and the 106 GTi is in my top five cars. Totally good fun. As good for a track day as a 150 mile journey. Need to get another.

To this day, I still say that was the most fun car I ever owned. Bought it new, and kept it for 3 years.

Traded it in for a Clio 172. Big mistake.

Fond memories of me in a clio 16v, and mates in 205 gti 1.6 & 1.9, 106 gti.

Clio was the fastest

205 looked the best

106.... meh. Handled much better than the clio mind, not the 205. But in that company was left out. Another mate had a strada 130tc and a Tipo sadicivalvole. really rare back then 10 years ago... good luck finding them now, fun too.

Wouldn't have one now. It would be a williams, ph1 172 or mi16 205

still good to see any of them blasting around though

One went at auction last week for just over £2600:

http://www.angliacarauctions.co.uk/en/classic-auct...

Not rare yet, over 450 taxed and on the road, another 1100 SORN, but rarer than the 205. Mind you that hasn't affected the daft money for 205 GTi, there's over 6k of them left counting taxed and SORN! More than 3000 of them the 1.9 version.

The Citroen equivalent, the Saxo VTS can be had for half the money.
