As good as the 106 gti was my 2.5k would buy a clio 182 which is rock bottom price wise and on a whole different level.

Welcome all,

This is my 1st post. I remember a work colleague had one of these and I had a Lupo GTI (6spd). Very similar in a straight line, his cornered flatter, mine a nicer interior.

I owned a 2002 106 GTI. Loved that car despite being rather cramped at 6 foot 2.

I'd love another as a run around, hell I still might!

One went at auction last week for just over £2600:

Not rare yet, over 450 taxed and on the road, another 1100 SORN, but rarer than the 205. Mind you that hasn't affected the daft money for 205 GTi, there's over 6k of them left counting taxed and SORN! More than 3000 of them the 1.9 version.

The Citroen equivalent, the Saxo VTS can be had for half the money.
When they were new, Citroen were falling over themselves to do deals on the VTS. I test drove them both in late 98, the 106 had nicer trim and having owned a 309GTI was the car I was initially drawn to.
Saying all that, with trade-in deal, discounts etc, to buy the 106 would have cost me nearly 2k more. On a 10k ish brand new car that's a serious difference for nicer trim when the cars drive the same! I bought the VTS

Back in 1998 they did well in group tests especially on handling

......6 years on at the end of their lives they were still doing quite well

The Puma was similarly cheap but just didn't handle as well/as fun for me.....plus was a similar price to the 106 .

Owned the VTS for just over 4 years - best drives I had were down the roads through the French Alps....almost as if they'd made it for them hehe

Same here. Although, i've always been a fan of fast Renault's, especially the Clio examples.

The Peugeot's have never done much for me, so there's an obvious bias.

I hadn't realised that 306 GTI prices had skyrocketed?

So a quick check found this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1998-PEUGEOT-306-GTI-6-F...

confused
Fair point, that one does look good for 140K. But I was thinking more of cars like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEUGEOT-306-GTi6-RESTORE...

Now above £3K, and I've seen cars for sale at more than five. Unprecedented for 306s really. I think that black one would have been less a while ago too. Get one of those as well while you still can!
I see smile

I knew they were cheapish and just did a quick google search and clicked on the first that I saw. I agree they are climbing.

To be honest, for a class-leading hot hatch that's 20 years old I'm surprised there's a choice of 5 with MOT. at least for under 2k

Picked a 306 GTI up a couple of years ago with 80k on the clock. It's had a new clutch, throttle cable (and routed properly to make it light), new brakes all round, refurbed wheels and new (correct size) potenzas. Totally standard car including original Clarion tape deck and original parcel shelf, not lowered and no loud exhaust or induction kit.

Hoping that values head north so i can recover all the money i've ploughed into it!!

I'm taking mine to Peugeot Festival this weekend. They're marking the 106 GTi's 20th anniversary in some manner.

Mine's completely standard bar the head unit and 38,000 miles from new.

Haven't got any decent pictures but here's one from when I picked it up in April.

Lots of fresh air between the car and white lines there. A clear demonstration of how bloated modern cars have become.
