I'm looking to book an extended test drive on an X3 or similar to choose my next company car. My company has a list of nominated garages and I know that it's possible to have a car for the weekend. I'm pretty sure there's no mileage limit, only to return the car with the same fuel level, but would it be inappropriate to do a planned 550 mile round trip that weekend?

Ask your fleet manager to arrange one, manufacturers have a demo fleet for this very purpose

I'm really interested in an Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio but will have to make do with a Veloce.

I would like to see how it would be on my commute and a run into the country before I decide to spend a lot on what will have to be a long termer.

In the past, I have rented cars that I'm interested in but I have hunted high and low and no company has the Giulia on its list.

I ticked the test drive box on the Alfa site and was called back very quickly and asked them if they knew anywhere that I could hire the car so as not to waste anyone's time if I decide it's not for me.

They could only offer me the usual spin round the block with the salesman sat next to me.

One benefit of Covid is that now the salesman can't accompany me and they might let me have half an hour.

Like the idea of being solo, more that I can park up and have a play with switches, menus and settings rather than ragging the thing.

All new to me, 8 speed auto boxes, flappy panels, infotainment etc

Coming from a 22 years owned E36.

It will be no problem to arrange - I'm just testing the water regarding mileage - maybe I have too much of a conscience?

Worth checking if there's a specific mileage limit, on higher value cars there may be; I've done similar though with no hassle, & done some where the delivery mileage was easily half what you're after.

I Think you’re taking the piss with that mileage in a weekend mind.

The ones we had were media/test fleet - provided you've checked, & you're below the bar Top Gear set, you're probably OK. I can easily do 1000 miles in a weekend.

We used to set a 100 mile per day limit. £1 per mile above that and we took a card imprint before the TD. I am a big supported of 24 Hr test drives but IMHO that would be ripping the arse out of it.
