Not sure I approve of a car with a possibly terminal fault as shed of the week but for the right person that's got to be worth a shot.

I suspect this will be sold by the end of the day.
Could just be a sticking thermostat, worth a go at this price.

Mine snapped the auxilary belt the day after I bought it. At the time, I assumed it was probably only the alternator and air-con that the belt was driving and didn't realise the water pump is also driven by the same belt, so it got a bit warm and started misfiring. I fitted a new belt the next day and all was sorted with no lasting damage. It could be as simple as that, especially if the belt is old and the car hasn't been used much recently. Very easy to check.

If I had the money to hand would buy this in a heartbeat. A solid shell MX5 is becoming a rare thing and I loved my old red one.

I remember being 10 years old and my Year 6 teacher driving a black one of these. I always thought it was such a cool looking car. My teenage years passed, and after getting over my Need For Speed Underground fetish of downlighters and spinners, I've come to appreciate cars a lot more.

I'm sat in traffic as is common in Birmingham, and an old chap pulled up beside me in one of these. More or less the exact one. It could very well be the same one! But I just sat there gawping at the car. It's such a beautiful car.

Ah if I had the money and no projects I'd buy this. Alas, I'm left to dream of what might have been.

i bought a 1.8 many years ago, bypassing the 1.6 as it had less power. a mistake i've now corrected.
the 1.6 is lighter and delightfully free-revving.

Anyway, a bit of tlc and this car could well be back on the market in a year at well over 2k.

Almost certainly that's a bit of oil leaking or old HT leads.

Just bought an identical one for £899.

I'm a recent convert to these great cars, a modern interpretation of the 60s Elan IMHO.

The mk1s are easy to work on & if this example is relatively rot free, then it's a bargain.

They go nicely on track too-

I paid £1200 for a vspec 1.8 with 81k on the clock in similar condition in October last year. 6 months later I sold it for £1900 and all it needed was a bit of a cleanup.

Blimey, I make myself a 9am appointment on a Friday, meaning I don't get to look at my fave PH feature until now, and he's already updated the ad re: it being feature as SOTW and then another update to say he's taken a deposit!

Had two of these V-Specs when we also lived in Worcestershire. Both on an H. First one was bought suspiciously cheaply on eBay and only because back then I thought it wasn't the done thing to renege on an eBay win. It had been badly modded - yellow Jap aftermarket wheels, big spoiler etc. Shortly into its tenure with us it locked me in so we took it to a 'specialist' in Brum. I liked their standard V-Spec on BBSs, they liked my modded one - I guess the wheels were worth a bit - so a deal was struck, not an amazing amount of cash their way, and we happily owned that one for a couple of years until the first Pistonbroker junior arrived.

Great cars and, cash permitting and with an upcoming visit back to Worcestershire, I'd have been sorely tempted for old-time's sake.

I'd say even if the engine is borked it still looks a good deal. It's a great spec, the body is in good shape and it looks like it's generally been well looked after.

Brilliant cars. I've had my plain spec 1.6 Eunos for ten years and well over 100,000 kms. It's now done 1/4 millon kms has had the engine replaced once, the roof twice, and a load of welding done. It's simply brilliant. Everyone should own one.

Sorry, but I have so much yawn for this the traffic has started to queue up to pay the tunnel charge..........................................

And yes I've driven one. In anger. Never understood them.

Not for me.

No evidence of rust?

Looks rusty to me. These sills have had some work too. Time to get the magnet out me thinks....

Either way not a bad car for the money assuming the missfire and overheating aren't something terminal....

Had a MK1 1.6 V-Spec for ~17 years - loved it but time eventually took it's toll.

The diff is a viscous one, not LSD. The gear nob and steering wheel are original (as appears to be the handbrake from the little we can see of it), however the wooden fascia is aftermarket - not that uncommon. No MK1 had electric mirrors as standard - which I found to be a right PITA as my offside one kept getting knocked.

Misfire could be leads (happened to me) or coil pack. Over heating, could be more worrying as the thermostat is closed b by default, so when it plays up or goes you end up with a hose popping off and lots of water everywhere (doing about 40-50 round McLeans at Donington and accelerating when mine went ...).

Miss mine, it's only been gone for 4 months, but can't justify going back to 3 cars.

It's still a LSD, just not a Torsen like on the 1.8.

The seller sounds like he knows his way around cars... so I am suspicious about the misfire & over heating issues mentioned - I doubt it will be a case of just changing an HT lead.

Also he has one of those yellow plastic tags that dealers use on the ignition key.

Bought one of these last week... £1400 for a limited edition UK 1.6 car.

Not actually sure why I bought it to be frank, but always wanted a car with pop up headlights!

Needs a new roof and a bit of interior trim and that's it!

Full service and cambelt change at a specialist is £150 - it's cheap motoring and will relegate the boxster to the driveway for summer at least!

Great little car to chuck about.
