50's Daimler with pre-selector gearbox - inherited from grandfather, don't remember this one, too young.

3x Moggie 1000 travellers. Grey then 2x white. All serviced by father. I always "helped". Including replacing/regrinding burnt out valve(s) on one.
Cortina mk2 1500 estate, green - inherited from grandfather again.
Volvo 145 estate, mustard. Mum had a Hillman Imp (beige) on which I learnt to drive.

Then I left home smile

First Car I remember dad having was a Mk3 Ford Capri in Silver, it was a T reg 2.0s Auto, I remember it sat in the garden for what seemed like forever as he was on a driving ban.

It was the first car I remember doing over 100mph in

After that was

Mk3 Ford Escort 1.6 Ghia XSO491Y
Mk1 Ford Orion 1.6 GL

Mum sold that Orion when they separated, he was offshore and came home to an empty garage.

Last cars I remember dad with,

Mk2 Granada 2.8i Ghia X in Green with grey leather, his partner at the time boiled it when he was offshore and swapped it for an Orange Skoda Estelle (rear engined job)

Last car he had was a Mercedes C220d in Gold, he loved that thing, but unfortunately wrote it off and passed away before replacing it

Mum passed her test late in life, and her cars she shared with her ex were

Mk4 Ford Escort 1.3 Bonus F527 LCU
Mk3 VW Golf 1.4 CL K285 NSU

Then her own cars

Mk3 Ford Fiesta 1.1 Ghia
Mk3 VW Polo 1.0 Fox
Mk4 VW Polo 1.6 CL Saloon (I bought it for her 50th)
Mk6 VW Polo 1.2 SE
Mk5 Seat Ibiza 1.4
Mk7 Fiesta 1.25

Triumph Dolomite.....god i hated that car as a kid.......

H reg Automatic Ford Orion in Essex White......If i remember rightly the gearbox imploded on that and parents had to borrow money off grandparents to get it fixed......

My parents have had the normal boring family type stuff over the years since they had my sister and I in 85 and 87 respectively, a few nice mile munching volvos etc.

Before I was born my dad had an MGB V8 that my mum made him sell, something he has always regretted. And my mum had a red mini with black leather seats for a few years before both were swapped for boring bigger stuff.

However, the most notable car that my dad ever had was the one that he swapped his MGB V8 for in 1987, a three door MK1 1981 Astra in cream. He sold this in 1997 and by the end of its life it had a coat hangar for an aerial, a radio that only received LW, two mismatched doors from a breakers, a smashed window with cardboard and polythene replacing it, and moss growing out of the window seals.

I can see why he had it having to park in a busy (no lighting at the time) hospital car park on a daily/nightly basis, but as a child it was so embarrassing for me to be seen in I asked him to drop me off at the end of the road for school until he swapped his car.

The day he swapped it for a brand new MK2 Seat Ibiza, which importantly to me was all one colour and had an FM radio, I let him drive me as close to the front gate of school as possible laugh

One of the benefits of .errmm ...being so bloody old is the ghastliness of family cars as a kid . No that they seemed it at the time -

Triumph Renown - an oxymoron made flesh

Humber Hawk Series II - 30 cwt. 2.3 litre stright four and about 70bhp , column change

Ford Prefect 100E - ribbon speedo , 71mph v max.

Things looked up with a 2litre Triumph Vitesse - much more power than grip., oversteer on demand, any time any place .I wrote it off in a black ice / lamppost/ over correction of over correction nightmare

Good topic!

When I was born, a 1984 E30 320i that was shortly swapped for one of the first E34s in the country, a 1988 525i automatic. Dad hated that car and returned it to BMW several times, complaining about vague handling and a rear end that would kick out when simply pulling out of a T junction. Never driven one so don't know if they're all like that!

That car was swapped in early 1990 for a Saab 9000 Turbo SE which he absolutely loved (and lost his licence in...).

Up until I was 16:

Dad:
A Volvo 340, Volvo 440, Vauxhall Cavalier, 2 Ford Mondeo's, Rover 600ti, 2 Vauxhall Vectra's, Alfa 156, another Vectra, Renault Laguna and finally a Passat.

Mum:
2 Ford KA's, Ford Puma, Ford Focus, Mazda 6.

My favourite was the 600ti though, I begged my Dad to get it as I found it for sale in the back of a car magazine. I just wanted his next car to be the fastest I could find, that was within the budget that his company gave him.

Dad had a W reg Golf GTI when I was born and mum and old Mini Clubman. These were quickly swapped for a Rover 3500 and a used Austin Princess. The Princess was probably the longest they kept a car having it for about 5 years.

Over the years mum had every generation of Golf GTI apart from the Mk6.

Oh yes lol. And gravel for tea.

I can recall the Astra estate having a coupke of cams during it's years of long service as for some reason the engine knocked and was rebuilt. The mk1 escort suspension collapsed when dad found a load of paving slabs dumped and decided they were too good to leave . It also once ferried an entire under 10s football team back from a game when the van broke down. (Without seatbelts)
My dad always eeked every penny out of his cars lol before they died.
