My 2007 118D when I was 19, after having a Fiesta 1.4 diesel for almost 3 years after passing my test. The fiesta was a good first car but seriously slow and I had a few faults with it that made me fall well out of love. I spent ages looking at beemers and reading everything I could about them whilst saving up for it. I was at uni at the time so never even thought about financing it, I worked during summers and during the week when I didn't have lectures instead. Thankfully I managed to get a good one and it was a huge huge improvement over the fiesta! Had another 2 beemers after it, both treated me really well.

Probably my first car - a 1998 1.2 Renault Clio (MK1) at 21

It was slow, the brakes were crap and the aftermarket sunroof leaked under heavy rain. There was a huge dent on the bonnet from the previous owner and a dent in the side where another car has also nudged it - again under the previous owner. It lasted about a month and a half before the engine crapped itself and the car ended up rolling down a hill.

Not a performance car in the slightest - however this car was mine - it was the ticket to freedom that the local rail service just couldn't compare to. Am I doing the 'proper' car thing right? Probably not, but at the time, anything with four wheels and an engine counted as a win for me.

My first car was a 1.3 Mk5 Escort LX in '97. A year later I bought a Renault 5 GT Turbo, so I guess that was my introduction to a performance car. In mid '05 through mid '06 I owned a Caterham R300 Superlight, so I'd list that as my first "proper" car.

First proper car will always be the first one I bought with my own money, a 1989 mk2 VW Golf with a mighty 54hp! A bargain at £300 with 12 months MOT. This car survived a year of utter abuse at the hands of me and my housemates then passed its MOT with only two tyres being replaced and was sold on to a friend as I was moving away. Still regret getting rid of it.

First proper PH car was a NA blue T-bar rev 3 MR2. Absolutely great car but being a 21 year old coming from a 54hp Golf I inevitably span it into a tree one frosty November evening after getting too confident.

Probably my current car, a 2.5l E85 Z4 si.

At 22 my only contender for proper car before was a 2ltr 318i Sport.

But from the way people have spoken to me about cars it seems my Z4 is recognised as my first, 'proper' car.
