Also you seem to be assuming i have some 100000db straight through asbo can, when it is nothing of the sort. If you were in your car you would hear me about 30yds away, and it is a rumble not a scream.
What car would I have to be in on the scale of 2CV to S-Class to hear you at 30 yards?

At what distance would I hear you if you had a standard can on?
The 30 yards is based on a 2004 focus in Zetec spec rolleyes. Standard exhaust on my bike is quieter than the engine itself.

A healthy set of ears forms no part of the Driving Test. Relying on an illegal exhaust as some sort of pseudo placebo for warning other drivers appears to be a little misguided.
I never said i relied on it, i;m saying it increases my chances of being noticed. You may not want to admit it or have even been conscious to the fact but it is more than likely you have been aware of a bike beside you because you heard it without seeing it.

How much did the noisy can reduce your insurance premium by?
My Remus Revolution cans upped my premium by £13. A small price to pay for a system that really does help people to know you're there. Unless you've ridden a motorcycle for any length of time you simply wouldn't have experienced the problem... People can literally be looking straight at you yet pull out anyway...worth Googling 'target fixation' to understand the phenomenon as it happens to bikers as well as car drivers alike. For some reason, a loud exhaust does definitely help. I can only assume this is down to the fact that they're receiving two senses rather than one (sight AND sound).

But I know what you're getting at in the quote above...why don't insurance co's reduce your premium then - well yeah, that's not going to happen is it. I could argue that my premium should be less still because I wear a hi-viz vest, decent leathers and an expensive 5 star rated lid...that said, my Honda Blackbird only costs £97 a year to insure (because I'm old and sensible?...haha), so I can't really complain.

Anyway, this is by the by...I certainly don't rag by bike up and down the street. I fire it up and leave. There is no issue if you're a sensible biker (which the OP is obviously NOT talking about).

Ahh, so now it's when you're beside someone? Are you often cruising alongside a car with your throttle wide open?

It must take real dedication to reach this level of pedantry. I lack the will to achieve such lofty heights so I can only admire yours.

I have an aftermarket can on my bike. I don't actually know if it's road legal or not. It's a Yoshimura RS-3 with no baffle. Sounds nice, loud enough for me to enjoy, but I don't know whether it annoys anyone and probably wouldn't care if it did

Do you understand that it's this level of "Sod everyone else" that prompted the OP to start this thread?

That'll do.

I declared mine (homologated) with the nominal hp increase, no change. tbh I bought the bike purely on the sound of the stock exhaust... then put termi's on it and removed the db killers, it is quite loud but i love it ears
But doesn't it bother you at all that you're more than likely annoying a lot of people?
in a word: no and life is too short to be worrying about what other people are doing.

I don't rev it up outside the house?!? I start her up, let her idle for a bit to warm up and ride off.. i don't ride up and down the street popping wheelies or reving the st out of it, as this would be understandably irritating.. I could behave anti socially if i was on a motorbike, in a car or on a push bike with a bit of card stuck in the rear wheel to make it sound like a motorbike - i don't. i'm not going to worry about irritating people through my actions life is to short you'd never do anything, and i wouldn't go out to intentionally irritate.

on the being noticed bit, when filtering it definitely helps a short blip of the throttle and people move out the way.. i give them a nice thank you or a thumbs up and proceed..

No, i'm often filtering through static traffic though. Who said anything about wide open throttles?

So it's ridiculously loud at very low rpms? For safety obviously, I mean. Those static cars can pose a danger, being static and all.

I wonder if some are embellishing their reasoning for owning an illegal exhaust for the sake of denial?

If you ever decide to try out motorcycling you will soon open your mind about it, instead of being so stubborn. I'm not one for anti social behavior and that extends to my exhaust. I said it is louder than standard, i didnt say ridiculously loud. You are the one imagining a situation that doesnt exist.

Yes, static cars stay static until they are not, at which point its nice to know i'm near them, before they try to switch lanes, or cut through a queue into a side street.

This is getting silly now...how about we get back on topic about what to do about chavs ragging high performance motorcycles up the down the street?

It's worth talking to your local community support officer - you will have one. You may find an unmarked car appears from time to time which is certainly what happened when I reported someone driving back from the village pub obviously drunk!

My opinion of bikes is highly unlikely to ever change.

I believe that the additional gain of having a louder exhaust than a standard exhaust is almost entirely in your mind.

Ask any biker than commutes daily in heavy traffic. You've never had first hand experience yet you are so sure of yourself.... a strange way to assess something.

Yes, perhaps I should try out motorbicycling because I've never done it before. Ever. I think Rawwr is the same.

No, because it isn't.

The OP started this thread (from which we've digressed by quite some way, sorry about that) because he's got people racing up and down his street repeatedly at all hours of the night.

I've got an aftermarket can on my bike which is louder than stock and may or may not annoy people. I'm no saint but I stick to 30/40 limits and I keep the noise down in town, which with appropriate gear selection is very easily done.

They're two very different things. I'm disappointed that you've failed to grasp that.

it's difficult to recommend anything that wouldn't end up in you getting into more grief with the local fuzz than the nuisance bikers would get, and hammering frozen sausages into almost anywhere is unlikely to get them to stop wink

Keep on at the old bill, get photos, videos and document occurences to show how repetitive it is and try not to get too frustrated with it: you can choose how much you let it bother you - make sure you record the plates and time.

this looks like an interesting approach:
