So you are effectively admitting that you drive with an 'illegal' aftermarket can, knowing that you exceed the legal noise limits.
Depending on much you throttle you are using, you annoy everyone in the immediate vicinity right up to those sitting at home a few hundred metres away.
Hit the nail on the head. Depending on much you throttle you are using, you annoy everyone in the immediate vicinity right up to those sitting at home a few hundred metres away.
Time and a place however. Residential streets are not one of them. Tunnels, duals and b roads however...

Percentage chance of convincing them their tedious Japanese IL4 bike sounds f*cking sh*t, no-matter how loud it is: 0%
Chuffed to be part of such a small exclusive club. I am one of the 0.00000047% - No need to change it on my current bike. Percentage of sports bike owners with after-market exhausts who genuinely believe they sound good: 99.999934%

I have had bikes with aftermarket pipes on, good quality road legal ones though - Yoshi's, Akra's etc, but there is a trend nowadays for cheap stubby straight through cans that offer little or no silencing. They make your bike sound st, and are pretty offensive.
I wish that the Police would start targeting motorcyclists as wallets on wheels like they do car drivers.
I live far away from a main road which is on the road to Poole where through the summer there is a big bike gathering every Thursday.
But each Thursday we get treated to the anti-social element of that gathering as they travel to the meeting and especially on the way back late in the evening. It must be really annoying to live on that main road.
I like bikes and can admire the engineering and enjoyment gained in producing customised versions. I just wish that didn't extend to making them as loud as possible.
The Police could / should make a fortune by levying the appropriate fine for illegal exhaust boxes.

Your wish was granted long ago. Go to Matlock or similar, and they'll be pulling you over for no obvious reason and poking round your bike until they can nick you for something. Even Yoshimura and Akrapovic ones (and even if they still have the baffles in), generally sound pretty terrible. My first bike came with an aftermarket exhaust and I, rather foolishly in hindsight, fitted one to my 2nd bike, but from the 3rd bike onwards I just didn't and still don't bother. It's not a nice noise. It never will be a nice noise. Even a bike with a standard exhaust can sound pretty offensive over 10krpm and I just don't get why people seem to relish in amplifying it and p*ssing people off. In summary: the sound bikes make irritates me.

Owner of 1 very loud bike and just a loud bike here... but there is a time and place
What's the right time and place?Should state, both are road legal.
2 minutes from my house I'm in the middle nowhere. When I do go through villages / towns I try and be courteous. I love the sound of bikes (not with straight through exhausts though), but appreciate not every body does.
Anyway, hope the OP sorts out his problem - assuming what they are doing means they are certainly in the wrong
Is any biker with an illegal exhaust able to justify their fitment for public road use?
In my experience even at low rpm throttle the noise typically exceeds a socially acceptable level.
Socially acceptable being a level that doesn't disturb the peace and quiet of those nearby as you pass and for a significant time thereafter as you are still heard as you continue your journey.
Why should your fun / thrill be at the expense of everyone else?
Isn't the speed, handling, responsiveness enough?

Even completely standard exhausts can be quite loud. 600cc per cylinder can make quite a big bang.
The key here is how they are ridden. The fair weather rider lot are not bikers but usually, knuckle dragging morons with a pack mentality. depicting themselves as bikers. Not too dissimilar to the lycra clad road warriors you see going round in CCTV dayglow cladded flocks.

Loud pipes save lives... Init Brov. And to some extent they kind of do. For exactly the same reason emergency vehicles have sirens.
Not quite. Sirens are two-tone with an unusual pattern to make them distinctive and so the brain can't gloss over them. Engines are a droning mess.Prizam said:

Or in other words......I'm selfish, want to ride like a tit and if I screw up hope that the car driver heard me coming.
Alternatively.
Don't drive like a tit and use a legal silencer. Bikes are still quite loud even in stock specification.

It doesn't work, as I found to my cost. Bright red Ducati 998, open Termignoni pipes, luminous yellow leathers,........Bang! Sorry mate didn't see you (or, apparently hear me).

Have you only ever owned 4 cylinder bikes by any chance? Prizam said:

I've never been convinced by that one. A bike with pretty loud pipes came past me the other day in traffic. With my windows up, aircon and radio blasting away, I reckon I only heard him about as he came past my rear bumper. Might be more likely to get spotted by a pedestrian I suppose but loads are listening to music and glued to their phones so still wouldn't hear it.It bugs me these days that so may bikes come with hideous dustbins strapped on side that huge number of people fit after market exhausts to improve the looks, or practicality in the case of bikes where the dustbin seriously limits your luggage options. If manufacturers fitted systems that looked ok I suspect there'd be a lot less excessively loud after market pipes about.
For the record I do have road legal aftermarket end cans on mine. They're a shade louder than the standard ones but not much, but a slightly deeper sound, and they weight way less. Loud pipes being ragged up residential roads annoy the crap out of me though.
