I posted the same question several months back OP when my rim protector was pinched going up a kerb and took a chunk from the edge. Kept it on the front and did another 5k before I got a puncture and had 2 new fronts. As above make sure you can see fully, if there's no cords then its hit what is purely a flap of rubber to protect the alloy, job done.

Sorry but I wholly disagree. The damage is purely cosmetic. What we are seeing here is the rim flange protector doing its job. Plod, even if there were any, and even if they did have time to randomly check tyres for cuts, would not be interested in the slightest in that cut. To replace the tyre would simply be an unnecessary waste of time, materials and money.
This.

shout Bugger Off!

Like I said I bought the car in Feb with already destroyed alloys. It's a 13 year old e46 with 150k miles, lacquer peel, and rust! Take the piss out of its appearance by all means but don't criticise my driving!

It'll be fine.

Were tyres lethal before the advent of rim protection?

Even an MOT tester wouldn't fail that ; it's not really that deep at all.

Well I decided to ask my friendly neighbourhood tyre/exhaust place as they see them all day long and if anybody will err on the side of replacement it will be them - was told "absolutely fine" - no cords visible, and it is well outside the tyre line. So I will stick with it I think. Thanks all!

Good good. I hate waste almost as much as I hate mismatched tyres across an axle.

The suggestions (from people who clearly don't know much about tyres) that you are 'endangering your family' are ludicrous.

Also the idea that you should replace your tyre with a part-worn of unknown origin and history and that it would somehow be safer than continuing to use your superficially cut tyre? Also ludicrous.

This forum doesn't half produce some nonsense sometimes.

As an add on to this, I am thinking I will replace - but it seems that Goodyear have replaced the Eagle F1 Assymetric 2 with the 3 - same load rating etc., but am I OK to mix on the same axle? I don't want to shell out for 2 tyres really...
You have more money than sense.

The tyre is fine.
