Ha! A bit different for me.

Decided on Friday I wanted one. Went back to the local dealer and on Saturday paid the deposit.

Unregistered stock car with decent spec.

Got a new 140 from them 4 months ago and thought it had scratched the itch. It hadn't, so here we are!

To be fair, they've given me £29k for the 140, which I don't think is bad.
Nice! Enjoy!

If I'd known, one of may team has just bought am Apr 2017 White 140i 5 door from a main dealer for £33k. You could have saved each other £2k!

Yesterday I submitted a no options request to carwow for an M4 and today I have a response offering me 12% discount before we even start talking. Same discount cash or finance so already the Alpina is about 7k more expensive than list prices suggest
M4 or M4 Comp Pack?

Non-Comp pack are being given away, Comp Pack significantly less so (back in Apr/May anyway)

Standard automatic M4 with no options.

That makes sense.

Yes but they're so different to drive, that 7k gap is before you hit the options list & for the more inferior (chassis wise) standard car, not for a Competition Pack model which is the one you want if you're buying an M3/4.

I'm not talking about the benefits of one over the other. I am just providing evidence of the fact that you will get a good discount on an M4 (forget the competition pack as the Alpina is based on an SE) and therefore the Alpina will always be the more expensive ownership proposition over the M car.

You can only get deals on the M4 because it's a poorer product, and the Comp Pack (and now CS) demonstrate how poor it is. With minimal discounts available on the Comp Pack, the Alpina is a far closer proposition (and VFM) that ever before.

And it's irrelevant that the Alpina is based on the SE rolleyes

What is the rolleyes for? It's a statement of fact. I have owned new Alpinas in the past so if it's an attempt to suggest I don't know what I am talking about then I'm sorry but you are wrong

The only dynamic difference between an SE and an (M) sport is the suspension, which Alpina changes, so it's an irrelevance.

It's even more irrelevant when explaining why you benchmarked it on the M4 rather than M4 Comp Pack.

But it does lead to different levels of kit being standard and there is a requirement to compare both with the spec required / equalised to really get an understanding of value

I couldn't get any worthwhile deals on the M4 CP either, really tried hard too, even with any discount the 6% APR isn't great and non-negotiable. Gutted really as the support was there 12 months ago.

I managed 23% discount and 2.9% APR on a loaded 440i instead with MPPSK (switchable exhaust and raise to 360bhp), individual interior, and lots of other toys. A similarly specced M4 CP was much much more expensive.

?????? You've lost me.

An Alpina is not closer to an M4 than an M4 Comp Pack because of the kit the SE has that it is based on. Not quite sure what you are arguing?

The Alpina is closer in terms of cost to it's M equivalent than ever before - being almost the same price as an M4 Competition Pack (that has the same BHP and less Torque).

And in any regard, I'm not sure how an M4 is closer in terms of spec to the B4 than the M4 Comp?

Totally agree. Remember my boss having a B10 Bi-Turbo in the 90s. Understated and a thinking man's 'M'.

There are some superb comparative reviews between Ms and Alpinas going back over time. I've had both and there is a fundamental difference between the brands. Ms are agressive and brutish. Alpinas comfortable and refined. They are both very fast and powerful but it's how they use that power. I've sold my M and now have 2 Alpinas ( a D3 BT and a B3S BT cabriosmile) which I find just right for my driving style. I love them but then again I'm a pensioner not a boy racer smile

2018 Alpina B4S vs M4 CP a good demonstration of the difference between the two cars.
