I tell them to the exact penny and then point out that I'd like to buy their woman from them.

I just tell them.
It's not exactly rocket science for them to work it out anyway and I'm not sure what I'd be losing by being upfront.
People can change when they know someone has a few quid. Usually not for the better. It's not exactly rocket science for them to work it out anyway and I'm not sure what I'd be losing by being upfront.

I usually just say "well you can pick up a reasonable one for £18-20K, a better one for £20-25K but this will cost you a lot more..."
Then you can bore them to death about all the work you've put into it until they slowly slink away
But you paid 10k in 2004... chassis rebuild. Big fuse. Another ten k. Would have been better to tell them you like to throw it down the drain hes fixingThen you can bore them to death about all the work you've put into it until they slowly slink away

I find it odd that so many people are offended by such a question.
It doesn't take much to offend people nowadays....foxbody-87 said:
Another one goes along the lines of "You're getting paid too much!" usually chirped by someone paying instalments on a diesel hatchback worth 10x what your 15 year old sports car cost
My wife has had that at work. "I suppose im paying towards your BMW?" Then they moan about the prices she's changed them.

I try and get away with ridiculous figures to see if the questionee is remotely bothered or just wants a figure they can bh about me over. Obviously if a fellow petrolhead asks then I will happily be honest as they may be interested in owning one themselves at some point, but I remember telling someone my Aston cost about £10k and my bugeye Impreza cost me exactly £36,941. He believed me.
Not a question you get asked when you drive a Seven. The usual question is -'Is it a Morgan ?' , 'Oh I do love vintage cars, my granddad had one of these in 1948 ' , or 'Kitcar mate innit. Build it yourself did ya ? My mate 's building one - it's based on an old Escort , only cost 'im like a grand - yours the same, bud ? '
When told that it's a factory built 2007 car which would cost the thick end of 40 grand now they terminate the conversation immediately , convinced that I am somebody with mental health ...ermm ..... 'challenges '

I tell them how much I paid for it and continue the conversation, maybe take interest in their car and ask a couple of questions.
You know, just be normal really.
That's fine if you think it's a pretty normal approach to the question. Many examples are simply: 'oi, wot it cost m8 at a petrol station' , usually with a rude tone. You know, just be normal really.
TBF, if I was talking to someone about it for a while and a lot of genuine questions were asked like 'Wow, is that the 5.2 engine?' 'Has it been rust-proofed?', 'I thought that you could only get RHD ones over here' etc. and then they asked, I would be inclined to be honest. Otherwise, I agree, find it quite gauche.
