RE: Next McLaren Ultimate Series rumoured

Don't forget also that Lanzante will take the 'track only' version and convert back into road-legal spec as the LM edition (which will, weirdly, prove to be faster around the Nurburgring than McLaren's own efforts)!
I'm still waiting for somebody to race a P1 LM, as then it would be the race version of the road version of the track version of the road car. They could of course then make a special road version of the P1 LM racer...Dempsey1971 said:
I find I am getting slightly 'meh' about all these hypercars. Le Faf, Chiron, 918, Pagani, Rimac.......
Not specifically this one. I am sure it will be fantastic, slightly dearer, slightly quicker, slightly stiffer, slightly lighter, slightly more of everything. But where does this leave us?
I think I am lost on this performance. It just cant be used by anyone. The cost in tyres, depreciation, etc on track is mahoosive, and the chance to use on the road is non existent.
Whats it for? Willy waving. But I dont think the manufacturers know how to get out of this escalating cycle of power and speed.
Meh. Where do I hand in my PH badge?
This and the fact that we now have hypercars coming out of our ears. In the past something truely special only came up a couple of times in a decade while now there seem to be half a dozen or so new million pound cars every year that disappear as quickly as they arrived. If you bought a McLaren F1 you owned a legend, but P1 owners will already be feeling a little out of date. Not specifically this one. What's amazing is that they'll easily find another 500 people to stump up the deposit and sign on the dotted line, long before they've even seen it.
Supercars used to be super rare and notoriously difficult to sell. Those days have long gone.
In many cases it seems to be the same people over and over again, pre-existing 'preferred customers' or whatever the terminology is. Depending on the size of the production run, it's often the case that most if not all vehicles are already accounted for well in advance, and before any public announcements are even made. No matter what's happening in the world generally, there's lots of super-rich people with the means to buy, and the manufacturers don't even need to bother to tell them how much they're going to have to pay.Supercars used to be super rare and notoriously difficult to sell. Cant help but applaud McLaren taking on the established big boys in this way.
But I can't help think of the phrase 'it's about the journey, not the destination'; if that were to hold true then I'd drive along aimlessly without ever really arriving anywhere, as getting to my destination without the wherewithal to have a change of clothes just doesn't compute.
Imagine driving from rural Derbyshire to the Goodwood Revival; the choice would be to either turn up in 'normal' clothes and be a bit out of place, or dress in period clothes and turn up looking like last Fridays crumpled chip wrapper.
As an aside, today's news that the government is set to ban new diesel and petrol cars from 2040 throws up the question of why McL have ditched the hybrid ability for this car (if that IS correct), as it would appear that we may be mirroring other countries in banning fossil-fuelled cars from then.
Surely, if you were driving one of these from Derbyshire to Goodwood, you would have sent your butler on ahead to pitch your tent, unpack and press your clothes, and run your bath in time for your arrival. But I can't help think of the phrase 'it's about the journey, not the destination'; if that were to hold true then I'd drive along aimlessly without ever really arriving anywhere, as getting to my destination without the wherewithal to have a change of clothes just doesn't compute.

Haha very good, you'll be giving them ideas! I'm just trying to think if there's any inappropriately borrowed Mac F1 acronyms that have been missed so far - LT, LM, GTR etc?Yipper said:
This will be another "fast but ugly and dull" car from McLaren.
Yawn.Have a day off Yipper
Yet more tedious Brit bashing. JLR yesterday, McLaren today.
It seems you won't be happy until Britain has no car industry and we all buy German or Italian.
Besides "Fast but dull and ugly" seems to some up Lamborghini these days: Vaneno?

I didn’t like the 540/570 so much in photos, but I think they look much better in the flesh. It looks more like a supercar than many others at this price point, at least to my eyes. Of course, looks are always very subjective, so I can’t tell you you’re outright wrong.

Huh. I can't help but think it's a backwards step to remove the hybrid parts of the powertrain if indeed that is what they're going to go. I understand why they want to do it, and I'm sure it'll be a staggeringly talented car but I very much liked the forward thinking nature of the electric and petrol engine combination.
...
I agree upto a point, the problem is that the Super Series 720s is so good, and so close to the P1 in performance terms, that nearly all the benefits of the P1's hybrid power were lost by the extra weight it added. ...
